What would be the most important spec to have for guitar rig 4 in a laptop configuration that will be used for a live setup? Processor, ram, hard drive speed?

Processor and RAM. I've got a Macbook with a 2.4 dual core intel and 2 gigs of RAM and its rock solid for the most part. Also, if your using Mac try downloading a program called Quiet MBP. This prevents the CPU from cycling on and off so the program is much more stable. Just make sure you have your computer in an area where the fans can work properly as this does increase heat.

    I have the same question.

I have bought Guitar rig 4 with the Kontrol 3. I love it, but my current laptop doesn't seem to be sufficient to run thr program properly at full power. It's a Dell D820 Intel Core Duo processor with 2 gigs of ram. I've done all the tweaks to get it to run at its best, but I still have to run it on a high latency setting to get it to work right. That's not much use to me.

My question, is what would be some laptops that would be ideal for running this software at its full potential?

    Cheers,

    Dave

I've since installed the software on a higher end Dell laptop. An E6400 to be exact with 4 gigs of ram, core duo 2 and it runs perfectly on high resolution. I believe the answer is that the minimum requirements that NI states will run GR4 will actually only barely run it. To run at full power us users need higher end machines. I think they aught to be clearer with us on that...

I'm on a pentium M 1.5Ghz with 512mb ram using E-mu 1616 cardbus. Mine will run most things at 48Khz 3-4ms latency that's in GR4. I honestly think the drivers and interface connect is most important. Cardbus is better than firewire. I also don't have the rig kontrol so I'm not sure if that's where the problem is re: high requirements.

fadedfailure and tequilarockingbirds (and others, whatever ;) ). What kind of latency are you getting with those laptops? And is that using a Rig Kontrol, or not?
    Are you on Windows7?
Did you have to buy a separate USB sound card, or is the included one (probably realtek?) enough?
Are your laptop using an onboard video card, or a separate mobile video card/chip?

    Thanks people!

I recommend getting a real musician's soundcard to get the best out of GR4 and not rely on internal soundcards. Get the best you can afford, whether that's usb or firewire. If you want the complete setup then go for the rig kontrol version from day one.

If you want to do other things like vocals and keyboards, then, you definately want to go for a soundcard with usable pre-amps and midi in/out and also the software version of GR4 + perhaps Behringer FCB1010 for floor control.

As for os, I'm still on winxpsp3 for midi compatibility reasons, although, I've tested win7 and it's a very good os especially for games. I stopped short of moving over due to no midi for my Audigy 2 plat pro soundcard in win7.

Most laptop users here are using onboard video card. For music production theres no benefit to having an external card. Very few laptops support this feature. A basic gfx chip will actually do fine (less cpu polling) if you want your laptop to be a dedicated fx box.

I tried to use GR4 with Rig Kontrol 2 on several PCs and Laptops. It works fine on my Dell Vostro 200 under Windows XP.

Today I tried it with a Dell Laptop Latitude D610: a lot of noise under XP, good sound but dropouts under Win7. I also have a RME Multiface. Will give it a try, I have the feeling that the Laptop power is ok but the USB-interface the bottleneck here.

Do I need a separate pro audio card if I'm going to be using the Rig Kontrol with the laptop?

No, the Rig Kontrol has everything you need. You should make sure that it works on your laptop. For me it does not, so I will try my RME pro audio card just to see, if it is an issue with USB.

Fixed the issue under Win7! The WLAN-Card caused the disturbance.

Check out the following article in the NI knowledge base:
    http://www.native-instruments.com/k...es+and+dropouts+from+my+audio+device+(Windows)

Especially the DPC Latency Checker tool helped a lot finding out the root cause of the dropouts.

Wireless networking services will wreak havoc on some laptops...same with bluetooth and those small multi-format card adaptors. I ended up creating two hardware profiles for my MSI laptop - one is called Live and has all networking, etc. turned off as well as other resource robbing services that are not needed. The other profile is called Normal and I use that when I need to download updates, patches etc.

Try here for more suggestions at what background services can be killed:
    www.blackviper.com

Also - check your computer and see if it has throttling enabled - this can be accessed in the bios and there might be a service or app that allows you to control it (some machines might call it performance, gaming mode, etc.) You want it OFF (the throttling that is) - you want the laptop running flat out.

There was also an option in the video settings - under Advanced - Troubleshooting (can't recall the name now) but it was below the HArdware Acceleration slider...you might want to try un-checking that.

I've done further testing with my laptop and I think 2Ghz is just about enough headroom for 48Khz 24bit 3ms GR4 hi-mode to run comfortably. I can knock the processing out setting audio options to 96Khz 24bit 10ms GR4 hi-mode at 1.9Ghz. Only stabilizing at around 1.93Ghz, but, still with occasional glitches.

I'd say buy a 2/2.2Ghz minimum Pentium M/coreduo/core2duo. Obviously, core2duo will have better cpu headroom. I've found memory to have minimal impact on performance if you're not using stuff like looper or long tape-deck sessions.

Hello everyone! I am using Guitar Rig Session I/O with Guitar Rig 4 into a Dell Studio laptop running Windows 7. 4 Gig of Ram, (7200rpm)Core 2 Duo Processor, and 500 GB hard drive. Runs great and sounds fantastic! I have plugged it into a Fender Hotrod Deluxe as well as a Carvin MTS3200 Head and Marshall 1922 cabinet. Sounds great with no issues. No issues at all with the laptop so far. I have had this setup for about 2 months. I have been extremely impressed with Guitar Rig.:D

Stratplus - is your version of Windows 7 32 or 64 bit?

I have a windows 7 update coming for my laptop (it was only $20) and I believe you can choose either 32 or 64 bit... I'm tempted to try the 64 bit.
