Lightning to USB adapter, NOT cable

Ok, I just got this bad boy in today and I'm not understanding why this won't work with an Apple lightning to USB adapter. And I'm not talking about the lightning to USB cable that comes with the iPad 4 or iPhone 5.

I've been reading threads here that only a lightning to 30-pin adapter works, but why can't the lightning to USB adapter work? Makes no sense.

 

I think it had something to do with the lesser amount of pins. There is a chip inside the lightning connector that decides which pins give which action. And the Z1 has two actions, give sound and "midi". So with an USB adapter or a non official adapter you'll get just one of the actions.. I spend a bit more on an apple cable, but it works perfectly. But since my gf keeps stealing my iPad mini for reading, I'm thinking of buying an older ipadwith more memory and a 30 pins system!

 

Ok well that does make sense actually. Looks like its time to fork over some more cash then lol. Going to go ahead and order an official Apple lightning to 30-pin adapter then. Blah. Thanks. Oh and I guess you can only go for the iPad 2 now as Apple no longer sells the third generation iPad with a retina display, unless of course you resort to eBay. But I wouldn't go back to a non-retina display for the larger sized iPad!

Wait a minute. So why does NI insist in supplying a standard USB cable as well? Wouldn't this imply that NI thinks users may own newer lightning iOS devices? Are 30-pin to USB female adapters even made? A quick search on Amazon yields zero results for iOS devices. So if these adapters aren't even made, who on these forums are using the supplied standard USB A male to USB B male cable and what exactly is the adapter that they're using? Because it seems to me the only other setup scenario would be to use the Apple lightning to USB adapter with the supplied USB cable.

 

You use the supplied USB-B to 30-pin cable and one of these:

Sorry it's a link to the Australian Apple store ... But you have to feel for us over here, the official shipment of Z1's to the importer is due to land next week!

 

That cable is the CCK [Camera Connection Kit] and that does NOT throughput power at all. It is not meant for use with hardware that requires power. It is for transferring photos but will work with audio (only audio, not power).

You have to use the one linked in the sticky at the top of this subforum.

They supply a normal USB cable for Traktor Pro/Laptop users. That cable is not to be used in conjunction with the iPad.

NI clearly state which cable and which adapter you should use for Traktor DJ App.

Yea, just ordered mine. It's just a shame you can't use the lightning to USB adapter in conjunction with a standard USB cable, because it makes the supplied 30-pin cable to USB B cable proprietary. Someone asked in another thread about what if they lost it, and it looks like you'd have to go through NI support which sucks.

Edit: Just read Karlos' reply that it also doesn't supply power also. Boo

Oops, sorry for missing the sticky. Thanks a lot again for the info. I did not know that it did not power the device. And the other USB cable for the laptop users makes a lot of sense now too. Thanks for clarifying that!
