looking for an ensemble that .... creates lower pitched tones - like an octave lower or so - from source audio, via perhaps resynthesis .... something like the old mda VST "Sub-bass synthesiser" ... any suggestions ?
    Thanks!

    Build one! :D

Really, the way most of those sub harmonic generators worked was by taking a low pitched sine oscillator and modulating it by the amplitude of the source, then mixing it back in. Usually you had decay time, mix and pitch to play with. (I'm thinking of the Aphex "Big Bottom" specifically.)

I keep thinking of trying my hand at it...along with a zillion other things.

A real quick and dirty way is attached. Quality is dependent to a large degree on the incoming signal. Possible additions include a filter after the frequency divider, cutoff perhaps being modulated to some extent by output of the peak detect.

    And, also:

the macro "Pitch Shifter" (Macros -> Building Blocks -> Effects -> Pitch Shifter).

Experiment with the settings. Generally much more "clean" than the aforementioned possibilities.
