Hello everyone. I'm trying to recreate or approximate the sound of Stewart Copeland's drums in the songs "Message in a Bottle" and/or "Don't Stand so Close to Me." Has anyone made any presets for NI Studio Drummer or Abbey Road 60s/70s Drummer that he or she would be willing to share with me here? I would appreciate it very much.

If no one has created any presets, I'd be willing to learn how to make them myself if someone were to give me some instructions for how to achieve the desired effect.

    Here are the examples:

    Thanks!

Are you seeking the beat/groove or the EQ/kit sound of the drums?

The eq/sound of the kit -- especially the snares and hi-hats.

(although I would love to lean how to program drum patterns as complex as those that Stewart Copeland plays.)

The 80's or Modern Drummer may sound better.

He always had his drums tuned very hi - so they had a ping to them

    and

he also used a delay - which is how he created his poly-rhythms

I use Jamstix, which has a Stewart Copeland model. I am quite impressed with the fills and accents that it creates. It also has a tight, clean sounding kit that is a good start for the sound you seek although I am sure you will always need to adjust compression and EQ.
Just thought I would mention it. Perhaps you could check out the demo.

Wow. I didn't expect that someone would list all the drum specifications! I'm still looking for a sample library or a way to come close to the correct sound without buying anything additional.

This was a Police drumkit specification that I found in under a minute. There are crazy fans out there that make lists of all info they can find about their favourite band. It's very useful if you want to have a similar sound. The AR drummer manuals give precise specifications of what's in the kits.
    14x5 snares in NI kits:
first one in Early 60s: Ludwig wooden Jazz Festival
first one in Late 60s: Ludwig Chrome Supra-Phonic (Rolling Stones :)
second one in 70s Open: Premier 2000
second one in 70s Tight: Premier Maple Shell
third one in 80s Chrome: Pearl Maple Free Floating System
third one in Modern Sparkle: Pearl Sensitone Elite Brass
third one in Modern White: Ayotte Custom Maple

After you picked the snare that sounds right to you, check the sizes of the kits in the manuals or pick by sound. I uploaded a multi with all big NI kits (minus 40s & 50s) where you can quickly compare.

    Have fun!

Oh, Octobans are in the 80s Chrome kit. And it seems for crashes and hihats 70s open kit comes closest.

Just wanted to include a link to a song I just posted using the Jamstix Stewart Copeland drummer. It really showcases his hi-hat work and snare work.

It gets really fun at about 2:45.

I'd like to ask a somewhat unrelated question in my own thread, for the purposes of saving space:

Can anyone recommend to me good quality headphones for mixing? (Signal as raw as possible- no bass boosting.) Believe it or not, i've been using my macbook pro's speakers to listen to my compositions-in-progress, and the only headphones I have are a pair of BOSE headphones (that almost certainly boost the bass.)

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/bose-ae2-headphones?src=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CPSYq9G62rcCFcqj4AodkBQAUg&kwid=productads-plaid^34106003642-sku^H65609@ADL4mf-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^14207118122

I have a budget of around $100-200, but this range isn't finalized.

and related to the topic, I've gotten a drum sound that fits well enough. :)

I would look for 80s tight samples that don't sound too much "pop". Tell me if you find sth

    What I have so far:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UzVkNC6W38[/ame]

It's not very close to the desired effect, but it's pretty good.

    (also, Scarbee Rickenbacker bass.)

I can't rate it because you are filming from your speakers, it could be every drumset on the world

I don't think you'd be able to rate it with an audio file. I don't have proper headphones so I judge my music based on what I hear from my macbook pro's speakers. (on a side note--can anyone recommend some good headphones $100-$200 or so)?

I'll render a wav or mp3 next time I open the project.

You said you are doing this with your mac's speakers? I am currently on my laptop and I don't hear the kick drum at all, the kick of the police is more like "plop", try messing around with attack, sustain, ...
But very well choice at all :)

The macbook pro has better speakers than the average laptop (I think it has a mini subwoofer) so I intentionally keep the kick drum pretty quiet to compensate for how loud it is on other systems.

This is a pretty big bump, but I'd like to say that I think I've gotten closer to finding the right sound. I'm trying to find a mix between the Reggatta de Blanc and Synchronicity sound. So far I know that I don't have enough "punch" in the sound, but, here's the work-in-progress.
