I've been a DJ for 5 years now and i'v just recently upgraded to an S2 MK2. I've been only mixing other people's tracks. I want to get into producing my own tracks but i haven't the slightest idea what to look at in a production software. i want a software that can grow into as a producer. show what do you look for in a production software?

The first and foremost thing you have to do:
Commit to spending A LOT of time learning it.

I personally bought Ableton Live (one of the best and most popular production software suites) only to find me not having enough time to use it...

If you want to start cheap, look into Fruity Loops (but DO invest into good training and DO commit to really learning it properly).

If you just want to have a play with some beats, I would suggest a NI Maschine or a Kontrol F1 to play alongside Traktor.

Music production is a whole other thing to DJ'ing, as I found out 3 years ago. I thought I'd put myself on a music production course and be bashing out releasable tracks within a year, and here I am still with no releases under my belt and only 2 tracks that I'm willing to let people hear. What Kallekenkel has said above is pretty much true, you have to invest A LOT of time into it and be prepared to learn a whole new skill from the ground up. The only thing that being a DJ teaches you about production is bars and phrasing.
Having said that, it is an immense amount of fun opening up your favourite synth and learning how sounds are made, and producing your own sounds. A resource i have found incredibly helpful is Dance Music Production , it is a website that sells tutorials on various aspects of making Electronic music, and includes topics like the Fundamentals of Dance Music, Synthesis, specific genre tutorials, specific plugin tutorials, and Sessions tutorials that cover things like reverb, delay etc. (Don't worry I don't work for these guys, just think they deserve as many props as possible as I find their material incredibly useful). The site also has a forum where you can discuss various topics

    Hope that helps
