    Hi,

I found an old macbook pro 15 with a really really affordable price, its in a perfect condition. i have been a Pc user for decades and have been using one for awhile 'not mine' but i like it very much..the problem that i cant afford to by anew one at this moment.

Its a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 1gb ram, have anyone tried to run traktor on one of these..i can upgrade the ram it does not cost much but iam concerned about the processor.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,

I'm sure you can get it to spec. up grade it and it will be fine and run smooth as ever.
While I would like a mac, I've found that the price doesn't justify just to get into some niche product that everybody beLIEves is better just because there is an apple on the lid. A pc will work just as good as long as you dedicate to your dj'n and don't put a bunch of crap on it.

We are led to believe that mac's ar better just out of beLIEf, they all have their problems and have their greats. It is how you use them... :)

Anyhow of course you can run traktor on it. As is, though I'd look at upgrading memory. I think trakto asks for 1.4 ghz and that's the pro version so you'll be fine.

you'll be fine with that processor. during your initial use just be sure to test the system to calibrate everything to work in harmony...

...for instance, set your latency low and increase until you hear no digital artifacting in your sound. scrub your jogs/platters vigorously to increase the CPU load and keep listening. And finally, test while using some of the more processor intensive features such as key correction and FX.

eventually you'll find your happy medium and you should enjoy a near bulletproof experience thereafter.

    good luck!

Well i hope so, i'll try to take the computer for a test drive to see how things work ..thanks for the advice.

dahJah i agree with you that the price tag for a new macbook pro is not justified but it really worth the experience but i have been using windows since ..actually dos first ..then win 3.1 to windows 7 i have even tried various types of lunix machines and i can definitely say the Mac os rocks..it handles every thing with ease..the os is really amazing..i have a macbook pro 2.6 with 4gb of ram 'work computer/my companies laptop by the way' and i have the same spec but lenove laptop and i noticed the different in speed..i have traktor demo on both and i can issuer you that you will notice the diff...beside that the nicely lit mac logo :)

    Thanks for the advice guys,

More ram for sure - OS X is greedy. 2g should be sufficient for traktoring, but 3-4 would be better in general. You could also consider 7200rpm hard drive to improve performance within limited budget. Battery replacement may also be needed (just trying to help with expense estimation).

I agree about os x being superior to all other available OSs. I'm using many others, but os x is my fave! It's so hard to brake and so easy to fix :)

actually i'm fairly certain that most people feel that macs are better out of EXPERIENCE. it's very unusual to find anyone who's only used mac and never a pc. i use both, personally and professionally...and i must admit that i only prefer my pc in cases where the software i wish/need to use simply isn't available for mac. even the machines that i have hackintoshed work better as macs than pcs.

(i have far better Traktor performance running a single core with os x than with dual cores as a pc, using a Toshiba tabletPC. this blows all my DJ friends minds)

in the case of Traktor, i often help many people out and always listen to them wish they had a mac so they wouldn't have the issue they experience.

truthfully, windows is just an inefficient os. the file allocation is wack. newer versions try to provide the glossy polished look of os x but bog down the system in doing so. but where the REAL issue lies is within the hardware/software marriage.

APPLE builds and designs their own machines with their own software...whereas Microsoft designs their software and relies on various 3rd party companies to provide the hardware. this is exactly why drivers are always such an issue.

honestly i can't hardly see why people think that macs are so expensive...it's true i can go buy a cheapo pc laptop for $400-500 but the specs are garbage. i can buy a 13" macbook pro at the local microcenter for $1000, which is fairly competitive with comparably spec'd pc laptops.

i feel i should also mention, i've also never had a mac break on me. my old ibook was rendered obsolete when mac went intel...but aside from that i've got every mac i've ever owned running like champs. yet i've got a box in the garage full of pc parts and busted laptops.

This is great advice..... There is no point having more than 4 as Traktor is a 32bit program and both Mac's & PC's cannot utilize more than this on a 32bit application....

Maybe its because I have never ever been in a position where I can do a comparison but seriously ...I do not, in nearly 10 years of Traktor use, ever remember thinking to myself .."damn, pc's suck ...I must try a mac". I have nothing against mac ...but then I have never had a reason to try. As a software developer I look after my DJ'ing laptop. I nurse the Task Manager and get rid of resource gluttons as soon as I spot them. I also NEVER put it on the internet and keep the Auto Update engines off. There is also a BUNCH of crap in the Services MMC that is completely unnecessary when you are DJ'ing ...most of it can be told to stop and only start manually.
There is also the way you arrange the files ...and the mattter of how this relates and works with the Windows Indexer. People do not understand that poor file storage results in Indexing overhead. There are many ways to improve the performance of your PC ...including ensuring that you always have PLENTY of empty space.
    I have two PC's ...a 4GB i7 Dell, and a 8GB i7 Lenovo. I cannot see myself ever changing.

I am sure the MAC is great ...I have seen all the praise singing. My philosophy though is simple ...if it ain't broke, dont fix it. Someday when I am in a position where I do not mind caughing up the extra dough for a Mac (and yes ..it is more expensive compared to similarly specced PCs), I will give it a shot simply because it looks good. It will not be because I am looking for more reliability or performance. It may have these ...but I am pleased with what I have!

LOL, actually i'm not one to say that "PCs suck" either...i enjoy the benefits of both.

but having both i can definitely say that (in cases of audio/digital media graphics software) i strongly prefer my macs.

i have no real issues with Traktor via PC, but i can't get as good of performance as with my macs using the PC machines that i own...you have two i7 machines, more horsepower than most other users around here, and you take proper care of them. it would a serious shame for you to have any issue.

many PC users here could learn from you!
