Aug 01 2006 OSX Security Update

Apple, per the usual method have quietly released the latest updates for OSX, this month a security update.
Its an extremely interesting read even if you just quickly scan the fairly long list of fixes. there is a certain 'holy crap batman' feeling you get reading it and a certain amount of XP-Fix-Deja-Vu too.

The devil and details is here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304063

My additional commentary on the matter which does not belong on the forums can be had here:

Re: Aug 01 2006 OSX Security Update

    Phil,

All I've got to say is that upon installing Windows XP SP2 I had 36 viruses within about 15 minutes. After about 5 years of using OS X I have had a grand total of ZERO. Now, I don't care where that benefit comes from, be it obscurity, a stronger OS, or just plain dumb luck, but only a fool would say that there is no benefit in that...

No offence Phil, but can you stop bashing Mac's OSX ???

Surely I think people will agree with me in that this forum is about TRAKTOR and not Mac's OSX or Windows ?

Knock me if you want, but I come on these forums for advice and I'm not getting that from you... I know you're a Mod, and therefore I think you should start to consider other people views...

Bash me for saying this if you want.

Dude!!! I dunno what Porn, Warez, Music, Video Filesharing were you were connected to. I'm most definitely calling you on this one! I need info..

How was your system connected to the internet? Were you direct connected or behind a NAT firewall? Did you have a firewall of any type enabled?

Were these reach in infections (intrusions with files sent in to you from outside) or were you pulling files in from the internet? What was the source of the infections?

What were you using to detect these infections over that 15 mins?

What was the _proven_ virus state of ALL your systems and your internal network prior starting the XP infecto-tron.

I don't get your last statement... can you please clarify?

No offence Neil but there is almost no bashing of OSX in my post directly above.

I posted a message here stating that there is an Apple security fix rollup available. Its list of fixes should be evaluated by affected users and it reads analogous to a Microsoft fix roll up.

What there is in the message is a LINK (which itself is moderately off topic) to a blog post and in the blog post is me railing on fanboy culture. That particular matter is off-topic for this thread as is the one we are having right now. - my apologies to all; I ask we return to the correct subject here

Please review the topic title in question. Should you wish to comment further on the matter of critique, then lets create a seperate discussion to cover those several issues, or feel free to send me email. Please continue to use this thread for discussion of optimization patches utilities tuning tips (I will endeavor to remain more neutral in future in this thread - I will continue however to point out what should be obvious).

Nah look like it must have got caught by the spam bucket at comcast. It's mostly pretty good. The blog site mail mgr is more agressive but it lets me know you've been sent to the bit bucket.

(...) all of which - not to put too fine a point on it - ain't bringing us any closer to that wonderful news, which at this rate I may not live to enjoy, if I keep holding my breath much longer... :)

Not Truly an Optimization tip, but...

OK Mac dudes... Name your favorite FTP GUI client for OSX.

I'm in need of one but I'm not sure which is the beast to own.

I'd recommend Interarchy tho … I think it's more Mac-like, but Transmit has a nice preview window which can come in handy browsing images on a server directory.

I'm feeling tempted to run TDJS3 on XP too, but I'm hesitating due to the fact that I organise my tracks in iTunes, importing its playlists in TDJS3. Without getting into the pain of installing iTunes on XP and have TDJS3 recreate all stripes and stuff from scratch, I'd do it. What would I have to do in my case?

Besides that, using v3.1.3 within Rosetta, my ScratchAmp2 won't get recognized. The FireWire symbol stays red and switching latency or sample rates won't do the job (as it would normally do if there's a problem). Is that a known bug?
I'm really longing for that UB version … 8)

Re: Keeping Cool with Fan Control

Think your McSomething is running hot and it needs some extra cooling? Well here you have a way to force the issue with Fan Control. I tried something out a while ago and for the most part it did not work worth a damn.

This seems much better. I would recommend taking care to only force speeds faster than OSX normally runs when you really need it as like all things mechanical fans will wear out and constantly running fans at 6000 RPM is going to be false economy in the long run. However if it 115Deg in the DJ booth and you are concerned that you are going to start seeing speedStert thermal limiting kick-in then this is probably worth trying.

Anyone have a recommendation for a taskbar CPU Temp monitor?

You can find the latest version of Fan Control on VersionTracker at:

    Backup Software For Macbook Pro

Hi Everyone, can anyone recommend me a good backup software for Mac's. This question might sound silly but I'm totally new to the Mac world and would like to purchase a piece of software that really works.

Thanking everyone before hand for any suggestions and your time.

Re: Backup Software For Macbook Pro

Me too. My tested favorite is Carbon Copy Cloner and the entire disk image is written out to an external hard disk partition that is bootable and a replica of the system when the image was made. To recover, Restore the external image minus the critical changed files to the internal disk boot partition. Carbon Copy Cloner is free actully Donateware, worth every penny ! I use Retrospect too for network data file backups.

"superduper" is Freeware and perfect for backing up on mac you can save in a image (is compatible with the Restoration tool on OS-X install disc) or make a bootable clone of your HD to xternal USB drive

    Traktor 3.2 and fan control

I've been testing the smc fan control app in the last two weeks and can tell you that Fan conrol will definitely help you keep much cooler CPU cores with massive temp differences possible depending on what you are doing. Its very much worth doing if you reimport and reanalyze your tracks on Traktor 3.2. I have been to reudce CPU temps from 185 F to 114 F by running the fan at about 3500 RPM when analyzing my collection and can keep the CPU temp under 130 when running the fans at ~1800RPM when just playing on Traktor normally.
