My speakers plug into my laptop via 3.5mm jack.

Does Maschine simply play out through the laptop when it is connected via USB?

    Like say Winamp would?

The Maschine hardware is a controller olny, it does not have ANY audio inputs or outputs.

Therefore your audio system (audio interface, speakers, etc) remains exactly the same with or without Maschine.

i presume you are using a Windows PC? make sure you have downloaded and installed asio4all - it is free.

asio4all is needed for better audio for music making on a Windows computer. it would be easier for you to google it and found out, as i use a Mac and so therefore don't use it.o_O

Although sound advice the above statement is not strictly true as it will depend on the existing drivers for your audio device.
