I plan on buying the academic version of Maschine:

I understand the limitations of the academic version are:

I can not resell it/transfer the license
I can not use it commercially

I do not plan on selling it or use it commercially, my main concern is:

Will I be able to update the academic version to 1.6 and all the future updates?
Is there anything else about the academic version that I should be cautious or aware of?

other than what you stated, no.

i.e. no transfer + only single PC license....

i'm using it in education mode; works like a charm! Also, i am using the latest beta.

If I buy the academic version from one of the retailers on eBay, how will Native Instruments ask me to prove that I'm a student when I register the Maschine?

I am a grad student, btw, so I'm in the clear. Just curious.

NI doesn't ask for a proof, it is the retailers reponsiblity.

That is, the retailer would ask you for proof of enrollment prior to purchase (or so the story goes). It was not different for other education packages i bought in the past.

Interesting. So unless the ebay vendor themselves asks for verification, it's just like purchasing and installing the full version?

no! the license that you buy is either academic or a full version. It has nothing to do with somebody asking for a verification or not.

My only word of caution is. If somebody sells you a product as an academic version, and then doesn't ask for your verification, this would make me somewhat suspicious. Thats all.

For sure, NI wouldn't be happy about that at all.

As pseudowilliam said and something you didn't mention, you can only install it on 1 PC at a time, just thought I'd reiterate just in case :)

How suspicious would it make you? The vendor in question claims the Maschine they're selling is a factory sealed academic version, but hasn't asked me for any verification that I'm a student. Their selling history indicates they've already sold ten of these to various other buyers.

Honestly, I'm just a grad student who wants to save $150 and make sure that there aren't any restrictions to what you can do with the Maschine if you buy the academic license instead of the regular one.

i plan on buying the academic.

    define using commercially?

i do a lot of remix competitions, and i plan on using maschine for shows.
    eh...

im just wondering if i become known for using maschine, will i have a legal team at my front door, or a paperweight maschine? haha

Ew said that upgrading does not upgrade to full version, just an upgraded edu... and i think thats kinda messed up when the FAQ pages states "The Educational Version entitles you to buy the normal full version update. You can find the prices in our Online Shop. The advantage is you then own a full version. There is no educational price-reduction for updates."

why is maschine the only exception to this FAQ? :(
i feel this should be fixed.

sorry, im just a little skeptical dropping $500 maybe $670...

TraumaBeatsDrama, if you plan on using Maschine for shows - and are getting paid for those shows - then you are using it commercially.

so i suggest you buy the full version.

if you decide you don't like Maschine, then you will be able to sell it.... and that is something you can't do with the academic version.

And what if I want to use the edu for commercial enterprises? will it restrict me from doing so? Can I still do it or will I get sued or something?
