I guys I just finished this track http://soundcloud.com/luigi77/saturday-breeze is just a 45 sec concept but I may spent some more time to make a 5 min track. This morning I felt inspired browsing for samples on the great whosampled.com and I thought to share for some feedback and suggestions.
    Ciao!

@luigi - has a kinda fatboy slim thing going on - not convinced i would pigeon hole this as DnB if I were you, very different track - would like to hear that finished.

Hey, let's keep this thread rolling, it is a good thread and necessary here on this board. I just got the Maschine myself, but I do know a little about making DnB. Right now I am trying to get myself productive again, it has been about five years since I had any level of output I can feel proud about.

As I am learning the Maschine, I think it is really well suited for making DnB in its classic form. Anyone on here that says they are not interested in sampling is going to miss out the fundamental element of how drum and bass is created...Sampling. The original classics were all created primarily inside of a particular piece of equipment, the EMU Ultra sampler, that sampler had enough memory and multiple output so it was capable of producing the entire tract. Those outputs had to be routed out into a mixer, that mixer had to be recorded onto something, usually a DAT, and the whole thing had to be controlled by a computer with a sequencer on it, which was usually an Atari. Now you can do all of that inside the Maschine and a decent laptop.

Hell the Maschine is a sampler...and it's chopping is amazing, and incredibly fast. You used to have to chop everything inside Propellerheads Recycle, then SCSI that **** into an external sampler. Grab those breaks, start chopping, if you don't have an idea for a tune, CHOP CHOP CHOP and CHOP some more. Save every one. The initial sequence may be useful, or it may not, but where you really need to start is using those chopped up breaks as a kit. Everything in them matches perfectly, just start coming up with new sequences.

As far as that really polished, gnarly, interesting bass, you have to start with good source material and resample it over and over till you get it just the way you want, the Maschine seems ideal for that as well. Before you had to route a song out, record it, re import it, screw with some more. Then you had to repeat it over and over and over and over and over till it was just right. If you were lucky you ended up with Wormhole, if you weren't well you just spent thousands of dollars on a setup to do it and you couldn't get anything done. If you follow that respampling video, which I know is specifically about drums, you can do this whole process in seconds. Just remember it's all about layering, automation, effects and resampling, when it comes to bass. Those incredibly interesting sounds on a Teebee and Calyx tune don't make themselves.

I like how the sequencer is pattern based, you can come up with more than enough variations to make a tune. I also like how you can export all of those variations as loops. After you have a song fully developed in Maschine, you could export all of those loops, but it back together in your DAW, add any other elements you might want, and master it if needed.

It appears to me that Maschine software is ideal for this resampling that you need to do get that really polished sound that today's drum and bass requires. I need to figure out some specific things with the Maschine then I feel like it is going to be on for me. Particularly, when you have a break, you chop it up, I want to be able to take individual hit and have them trigger at the same time as individual slices on the break. Ideally they would be on open keys in the same instrument, that trigger at the same time as the slice. So say I have a break with two kicks in it, I add two more kicks that are one hits, can I set the two pads that those kicks are on to trigger at the same time at the two other kicks in the original sliced break?

As far as someone saying that they were considering going with a spectrum analyzer to help with EQing, I couldn't agree more. Drum and bass is way more dense than most other forms of music, and figuring out how to fit all that sound into the music can be the hardest part of making it. EQing is so important. Get into the habit of filtering out everything that isn't necessary to free up the space needed for all the elements, and develop an understanding of what elements are where in the spectrum...It helps.

yep totally agree...to be honest...that guy is full of Bs...all these new comers sample everything in D.n.B but ive been a junglist/d.n.b head for years and you write your own beats, maybe layer a chopped up sample wth your beat but to just use sample packs in my opinion, your not a producer then....its like the difference in cooking and microwaving a premade meal!
    ---
Also f you use sample packs and pre made loops then your garenteed theres 1000s of other people using that exact break so don't kid yourself that yours is different and people won't notice....trust me...write your own stuff, takes practice and time but you will get better and better and the end result is much more satisfying

I redid the drums from Awkwardness and re titled the song "F*ck It"

All my drum loops are sampled. I like that pitched up sound you get from them. I grew up on that sound from the 90's.

    Hey there,

first of all, I really dig puzzle's Call of Cthulu and Pandemic that i've spotted on the way back ;)

Heres my first DnB tune ever. Drums and reverse cyms are from Machine, the basses are resampled. Sources were massive and fm8.

    Cheers,
