All I can hear in this track is how bad it wants to be Slick Rick and Vance Wright rocking the tables cutting that stab up like crazy in this track: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O44Dvm6GZEk"]YouTube- Slick Rick-Lick The Balls[/ame]

One of my faves off that album. Vance was really sort of slept on for his turntable skills. I don't know who on the production team (that'd be Jam Master Jay, Hank Shocklee and Eric Sadler) worked on which tracks and how much (this one has more of the Bomb Squad feel, but its so DJ driven that it could have even been mostly Vance Wright). I guess I'm just too East Coast at heart to give CPO and Ren their due, haha...

Sure, Lick The Balls is a classic, but that CPO track is much more than that stab if you want to hear it. ;)

Paw, snap out of it! This beat isn't that bad. First turn up the bass. Then it immediately sounds better. Now mute the vocalsample or mix it way in the background. :p Skip the way too happy, bouncy chorus. It's giving me visions of Snow White and the Seven dwarfs (heigh-ho). But on a serious tip, that sample at the end is really nice. Put a LP filter on it with the cutoff at about 15% and the resonance at about 50%. And raise its output level to about +4 dB. Now copy it to another pad and put a HP on it with the cutoff at about 55%. Add the metaverb with the mix at about 25%. And maybe a little beatdelay. And lower its output level to about -4 dB. Now see what you can do with the separated bass and strings/guitar.

I almost wonder, because that stab comes in at 1:45 on the track Kool is Back by Funk Inc, if the CPO track was either scratching in the bit from Lick the Balls, or if that bit, because of the break right after it, had become ubiquitous on some of the breakbeat records from that time. My crates don't go back that far, for vinyl at least, but I know I've heard it a ton of times on newer breaks records, its not quite as common as "FRRRRESH" and "AWWWW YEAH!" but its up there.

Vance Wright rocks most of the break from Kool is Back, which is a pretty dope break, and it does go real nice alongside the Isaac Hayes track too... there's a lot of inspiration on this forum, I think this was worth at least half of buying Maschine. I like the collaborative thing this thread has going on especially.

Lotuz, have you heard that Steinski mix called Nothing To Fear? I swear it has to be Ren during the "I'm a Role Model" bit, saying "I tell 'em, if you really wanna be like me... you know what, I really don't know what the hell I tell 'em. I mostly just sign autographs and whatnot..."

But, you know, brain damage on the mic don't manage nothing but making the sucker and you equal. Don't be another sequel!

I always gotta laugh how Ren does that verse in a song where they talk about other rappers being fake cause they won't swear on an album. Meanwhile, all of them are blazed 24/7, and about a year or two later, it becomes cool to be known for smoking out in hip hop, so Ren jumps right in with his new lyrics, too.

At least it made it alright for Coolio to cop to being a crackhead. I like a more honest hip hop, even if it is a bit uglier.

How are you gonna blast up maschine forum with **** saying you've been making beats for 19 years? You've only been alive for 19 years and all you got is a free laptop and maschine? You're a joke homeboy. You don't even have an audio interface!

You mean Fab 5 Freddy and Run DMC?

You can find Kool Is Back on vol. 11 of the famous Ultimate Breaks & Beats albums which was released in 1987. I wouldn't be surprised if most artists used that record instead of the original.

The Kool Is Back break is one of the nicest. Growing Up In The Hood, one of my favourite CMW tracks, is based on it. But I also like how Premier used it on Jeru's Come Clean.

Me too. I know how competitive and even hostile it can be on other forums.

No, I haven't heard that mix. Funny story about Ren. Still he was my favourite MC from N.W.A. Too bad he never made that solo album produced by Dr. Dre.

I figured I would stop being shy and share my stuff in this thread too. This is the first beat I made that wasn't completely terrible. I know I have a long ways to go, but I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of chopping samples up and such.

BTW - I know the end bit feels tacked on. That is a sample from the same song, and I just wanted to throw it somewhere for later use.

I actually think it all works together decently, but I think what would help is a couple things, the clanging sound you open with needs to be dulled down with some heavy compression, and some then I'd add reverb to give it some air around it, and get the volume lowered too. The frequency is just at that point where it stands out too much, but I don't think the pitch should be lowered, just the level of volume, then try panning it back and forth against that second series of snaps that come in, to create a real sense of movement as the beat gets swinging. You might even try doing them both at 1/8th's, but opposite of each other, so you are still hitting on 16th notes when they play together.

Now, as for the last few bits, its sort of that Jay-Z New York vibe, but that is borrowed from Nas' New York State of Mind, which is borrowed from Billy Joel, so, my suggestion, and it doesn't hurt that I'm a big fan of the piano man, is to listen to some of Billy Joel's classic tracks, because they do what you are working towards, it might give you some ideas. You've got a beat that's not to bouncy clubby but not gritty grimy either, so its a really fine line to walk, I think just a few touches here and there and you'll have a really tight track. Then at that point, its just polishing the sounds. Lengthen up that outro a bit, maybe drop in some other sounds to solidify the idea of where you see the story in beat existing, too. Small jazzy club? Out in Times Square? Afterhours party? There may be other non-typical sounds that help place it there without being sound effects, either. Even something as simple as overheard bits of conversation, very quietly though, can make great ambiance for a track.

Grimm, I really appreciate your critique. There is definitely a lot of stuff I need to learn. Hell, I'm still trying to work on my drums and not having them sound so flat. Sad to say, I lost that particular project, due to HD issues, and don't know if I'm going to go through the steps to reproduce it (I'm happy I uploaded the mp3) , but I will definitely take what you said with me in the future. Billy Joel is probably an artists ripe for sampling!

Now a question. Is there a way I can zoom in when I'm trying to edit a sample? Say I wanted to use parts from a whole song. If I upload the whole thing to maschine, when I try to assign different parts of the song to different pads, it's difficult because editing the sample lacks the finesse that is present when you're editing a sample that is only 20 seconds long or so. I know there was a way to do this in FL Studio, and was just wondering if this functionality was in Maschine's software as well. Hope that makes sense.

@lotuz ,yes i can hear them, same sample complete different vibe
@tac...this is beside the redlight boogie pro my favourite track of yours sir.....like the drums
@ jonny bvo , the next update (beta testing hopefully still in feb ) will make it much easier for us sample-heads,it contains "destructive audio editing" means you can cut ur sample right in maschine to the right size instead of set start and end points to always the same snip.....
to zoom in with the sw u can use the looking glass at the left bottom of the wave form...
@nekron , yes im back and it feels like coming home ,gonna walk my dog, have some breakfast and get on it right away... and guess what,im looking forward to it ....
who needs zynga poker... (though i must say i was getting virtually rich meantime)

And you can zoom in/out from the controller too (NAVIGATE+pad 6/2) and move left/right (NAVIGATE+pad 1/3).

^ one of my hip hop beats from Maschine - I used all Maschine factory library on that one - which I very RARELY do... but, it shows that you can make some tight **** with just the factory library - anyway, rate/comment/subscribe to my YouTube channel.. I'm always putting up stuff - including reviews of gear/tutorials/etc. ..
