Welcome to the Hip Hop thread.

I don't think it's the right sound for this beat, so I'd leave it out.

glad u all like the new stuff....:)
at least for me theres a reason for that dracula snare lotuz, i always put the sample down before the drums. now to get it in perfect sync with the drums later build, i always grab the first vinyl kit in the list ,put the snares down in an empty pattern and find the tempo of that ish.....
later when searching for drum sounds , the dracula snare turns out so dope that i always come back to it...
nice stuff senor , known as a slow jam lover i really dig "everything", if u'ld put some re- or metaverb on the key or xylophone that plays in front of the strings i think it'll stick together even nicer.... the tune change at 1:23 is a bit harsh though...

@vinnie treux , thats cool stuff for riding home into the sunrise in ur car after a druggy long club night

Lotuz. My man, you GOT OFF on that track! Are all of those sounds from Maschine, or is there a sample there. I can't really tell.

Those are all samples, but only the saxophone (with the beatdelay on it) is from the Maschine library.

@cemsema I'm feeling that Game of Death. I too love sampling from old 70's flicks. The track just feels epic. Love it.

@ Lotuz As always, the man, you are.

    Whats up ya'll
I've been following this forum for a few weeks n learned so much from everyone, especially Paw and Lotuz - Thanks! I'm brand new to beat making - I've only had Maschine for a few months.

Sounds like I'm in the right place as I see you all influenced by my favorites like premo, pete rock, beat minerz, mo bee etc

Love to get your feedback on my beats. You'll notice there isn't much structure to the beats just yet. I just wanted to get the get some drafts down to get some feedback started. More constructive criticism the better.

Where I'd really like help is with the drums. I want to get that early 90's sound.
Is it possible to - recreate these drums with Machine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrtC9HzaL_w

Pawcut/Lotuz - do you use all Maschine drums/bass or do i need to be getting more kits?
    ---
@cemsema - you have a great sound - really feeling your beats
@ Lotuz - incredible. Black Moon over a premo style beat - amazing. I've looped it over n over.
@Pawcut - I like ALL your tracks. They all sound so smooth and effortless. How long have you been doin this for?

I dig this track, I just wish the drums didn't get softer when you get into the 2nd 16, it feels like the snare just softens up too much, maybe some reverb on it to keep it present as a driving sound without getting the volume up into the irritation level. And I would like to hear a couple more pad synth sounds layering around, and some automation on the sounds in the acid 303 pad as well. Just to give it some sense of movement as it goes along. But the drum pattern is really, really sick. I like how polyrhythmic it is.

These drums are sampled from this track:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdhEsPZFc9U"]YouTube- The Whatnauts--Why Can't People Be Colors Too? (1970)[/ame]
    ---
I like track 4 -1 a lot, but indeed it could be so much nicer with different drums.
    ---
I don't use the sounds from the Maschine library that much.

@lotuz , quite premoesque  .......( +1 knowledgepoint  , mr sample faq)
@93til , really dig the vibe of your samples esp. on the 1st and last track of your page....., i'ls suggest to put filters or eq's on the samples to cut the low end and give the kick more presence... check post 579,lotuz gives a slight very helpful reference here on how to split a sample in bass , high frequ.....
compress and eq the drums , a smooth track dont mean the drums must be shy and not bangin' :)
it should be possible to recreate the whatnauts (smif'nwess) drums with maschine with some lo-fi , filters,eq.....but why dont you just sample them from the original or "steal" them (at least the single sounds) from smiffn'wess or whomever if you like .....i mean they "stole" them theirselves from the old classics......
i dont need more kits in maschine , this lil genius is called sampler....
last , ive been playing around with some sw -programms like reason for 2 or 3 years , but never steady and on a serious level .....i really spend much time ,passion +focus on beat-making for a year now......,but im an old man and im listening to music in a very passionate way for about 30 years now....

I listened to this on different speakers. I don't like the keys anymore. Back to the lab, Beatman!

Nice choice. I can see why you would want to have drums like that. I would say just sample your drums sounds if you don't like the factory sounds in Maschine. Over the years I've accumulated quite a large library of drum sounds. But you can never have too many...so I sample from songs still from time to time. I've been using the Maschine drum recently (prob because I've only had the thing for 2 months now) and you can throw all kinds of effects on them and make them sound however you want! It's an awesome machine, our Maschine. :)

I would like to ask a bass question. It seems to be a hurdle I'm struggling with at the moment. I like to use sub basses, but the problem with that is, not everyone speakers are gonna pick up some of the real low end stuff. So, should I eq it to where there is more midrange coming through also, or should I layer a bass with a higher range on top of it? :\

You need to cover the middle range when you start adding deep sub-bass to tracks, otherwise you end up with really empty sounding stuff on the majority of people's systems (headphones, car radio, etc). From the production side, sub-bass is really the most difficult part to manage. Do some googling, AudioTuts had a good article on sub-bass just a while ago, which had some good tips. Its the one channel that most likely will bypass all of your compression settings, EQ settings, etc for the rest of the track, and possibly just go straight to the master outputs.

And make sure you have a good sub on your production station, because you can't really do sub-bass by the numbers, the way you can adjust some other sounds, at least in my experience. Its really easy to have the levels pegged and not hear anything until you play the track over a system with a subwoofer, and then you just have pure mud.

interesting.... imho, i think you have too much variation going on in your chopping in that it might be difficult for a rapper because of the changes. i would suggest you have fewer variations and make sure you add a bass and some other sounds to the mix.
