I think that depends on the sample. I love slicing a sample up and flip the pieces to some dope new stuff but if i got a sample and the sample is the shiiiiiiiiiit....so why should i flip it? :D

That's more or less how I do it. I'm diggin' alotta music 'til I found some dope stuff I like and then I start to make a beat.

True. If it's perfect, then there's no need trying to improve it by flipping it. The main sample in Takin' It Easy (horn + voice) hasn't been chopped up that much either. But the strings are from another part of the song. And besides the drums I added a bass, a Hammond organ and a guitar.

    Let's hear it.

Indeed it's raw. I can't really tell how skilled you are from hearing this beat. Hopefully in the final mix the samples and the drums will sound nice together.

    Do you have more? :)

And another one for the fire!

The thing is, I never really finish my beats. Before I can finish one I already started three new beats :D
Most time I'm doing raw loops, I love dirty loops :D

And I think arranging is useless if I'm just doing an instrumental...ya know?

Now that one got my head nodding.

I know. That's how I work too. I won't start on the arrangement until I have the vocals.

I like this beat a lot, it has really gritty vibe to it, I think the rawness of it really helps the energy. Now you just gotta figure out a way to keep the rawness and still be able to create a standard intro, bar, chorus, etc structure.

I don't know. IMHO not every track need intro/ verse/ chorus structure. Look at like, every Primo beat. An ill loop. Thats how most great and classic hip hop is/was. Sometimes I do hooks and changeups and all, sometimes it will just be a 4 or 8 or however long loop.

Agreed! Sometimes it's enough. Sometimes it gets bland. Sometimes too much playing with the beat will take away from the vocals (if they exist). If the vocals aren't anything special then maybe you'll want to direct focus to the beat variations ;)

I find with some samples there just aren't many options too...like you can get one amazing loop out of it but unfortunately can't make anything else that sounds good enough to compliment it! In those cases it might be best to keep it simple.

    ALSO...

Just got my Maschine yesterday! So happy with it so far. Just learning the ropes. Coming in to work today was terrible (almost called in) but I'm off the next two days so I'm gonna do some serious learning and experimenting! Can't wait to share some music with you guys and get some feedback...

Thank you all for the comments. Makes me happy if you like the beat :D

I also think in hiphop it's no need for some intros, outos etc. depends on the track. I'm a fan of that raw stuff. Just a dirty cracklin loop, nothing else. That can be soooo nice.

Me likey, if you would bring that upright bass out a bit more I think it would give it a bit more "bounce", it's seems to get muffled a bit.
I look fwd to hearing more...now you've got me wanting to go to a record shop dollar bin.
