You should be able to do it in the mix, you need more open frequency space between the kick and the snare, some bitcrushing and EQ'ing can really help pull those two sounds further from each other. Think about what it sounds like when the words BOOM BAP come out of your mouth, that's really the impact you want your drums to have. Notice the emphasis in the words, too.

    bOOOOm BAP!

The snare should crack and the kick should thud, with nothing gluing them together, its the rhythym you are after, the flow, the head nod, that's what makes boom bap tracks so great. Your brain gets to fill in all the space, the lyrics don't have to compete with anything, etc.

Here is my first attempt to the world of Hiphop hehe. Coming from electro techno background it is maybe not pure hiphop but i want to share it with you. Maybe you could give me some hints for the future.

Quick live performance with Maschine, Little Phatty and Cubase (sorry for driving level little bit against the wall)

@ Tac Honestly I felt the beat was a little, meh. The main sample seemed cool, but all the 808s didn't really fit, and I wasn't really feeling the horns. If its your first hip hop beat don't sweat it though, you will get it goin with practice.

But here is a beat I made using this cool french sample. Its just a simple, straight little hip hop joint. Let me know what ya'll think.

Lets see(listening now)......Better indeed. Not feelin those claps..... sample is alright. Still not bangin in my opinion. Better though. I think you need to use different sounds and it would make a hell of a difference. Mind droppin a line on my beat though?

New Mos! But naw I didn't even cop the Estatic or whatever its called. Mos is badass but the New Danger just threw me off after Black on Both sides, I haven't even checked any of his **** after that.

Thanks for the comment though, I'm all about that east coast vibe dunny!(Even though I'm in the southwest haha.) All about that original real ass hip hop.

    EDIT

I was just thinking, who else is down to have a little thing goin on like on FP where we put up samples and people can take a crack at em, just to get crits and to see how everyone approaches the song. I'll up that French sample if people are down.....

@ rawtech , ur electro background is clearly audiable ;) , still like the vibe ,reminds of some dj shadow stuff , what i miss for a hip-hop -beat is that repeatative loop vibe , in the end its a more like a lil phatty session.... in my ears the snare is too busy for a headnod.....

@ tacoffice ,knowing ur early stuff i feel u really improved man , keep it up...i like looking good a lil better than old school ...what i dont really feel are these low end digital kicks , they dont develop a real boom to the bap of the snare..

@nicro ,nice ,like the way u put that bass and u seem to be real good in mixing down stuff as well.....plus im down for whateva but we might get probs if we upload samples with royalties here...plus i really like the new danger though its a total different cup of tea than black on both sides.

Did someone say my name? ;)

I like oldskool with the Slick Rick shakers . It's almost perfect for an MC like Jay-Z.

But you want to know what I would do, so...

I'd use a stronger bassdrum to match the snares you're using.

If possible I'd prevent the chops of main sample from overlapping. It sounds like the pianist is holding down the sustain pedal in the third bar.

I'd probably filter (high pass) the main sample and add the bass myself like I did with Takin' It Easy. Maybe that will make the overlapping sound better too.

Check out the hi-hats, because I can hear them flanging at the end of the fourth bar.

And I'd pan the shakers and the hi-hat a bit to the left and right.

Where are the horns that Nicro mentions btw?
    ---
Very Pete Rock-ish. And that's a good thing.

    Sure, why not?

Can it be that it was all that simple then?

Yup. Amen-Ra breaks down the minimal bits and pieces used to create one of the top beats Jay-Z has laid verses over, in my opinion. Kick, snare, hi-hat, bass, sample, and a touch of keyboards. Many times when I have trouble with a beat, I strip elements out, one by one, until the track gets back to that original rough and ready idea that first came into your head.

I think this is a perfectly realized example of following what's in your head, and not getting bogged down in the idea of more is better.

hmmm , i dont really feel it needs more to it .....
maybe a lil cello or pizzicato 8th arpeggio on the end of every second bar , but :
if its not broke dont fix it imo
