That sounds like user error, somewhere... I don't have Jam so can't help, but I'm sure someone will chime in

I can do this in the software without ANY controller (Jam, Mk1, Mk2, or Studio) connected to the computer.

Hi, I guessed it was user error. My apply button in software 2.5 doesn't have a sub-button for new group etc that I've seen in some YouTube tutorials... just apply. In software I slice the sample into 16 and apply... do I need to do something in between those steps? I tried selecting a group, a sound etc but I still get the pattern mapped across the keyboard.

    Thanks,
    Rob

Drag to group and not a sound slot. Make sure group is not in keyboard mode.
Edit: Meaning, don't use the apply button in the software when slicing. Use the icon to the right and drag up to the desired group in the to arranger area.

Highlight the pad you want the sample on. Use the browser to search for the sample you want, and double click on it.

Thanks very much b-righteous. I hadn't tried dragging the icon - that works exactly.

What's perhaps more surprising is the fact that nobody(besides me of course)seem to be bothered or even slightly annoyed by this glaring omission. I don't think the Jam should be seen as an "add on controller" given the 400+$ price tag. Not everybody want to have 2 units, 2 Maschine License and so on just to access what in my opinion is a core functionality of ANY groove box.

I really wish NI can comment on why this odd choice was made and if we can expect this minor but important feature in an soon to be released update

It's not a core functionality of the Maschine Jam workflow or a core element of the design for Maschine Jam though. Sampling workflows are just not what Jam was designed for and perhaps even the best implementation of control over Sampling mode would be limited and potentially even frustrating. Overall, I think it's better that focus was on what it would be good for (step sequencing), though unfortunately I think it's still a way off excelling at that too.

If you wanted the sampling groovebox workflow, Jam was the wrong purchase.

I have maschine mk2 as well as Jam. I agree. Considering that some exclusive features as now in Mk2 and Studio. Jam should at least get the 'lazy Chop' feature which is the manual slice, with the flashing button. Then fine tune in the software.
