Maschine -> Traktor S8 is super noisy

    Hi all.

In a new setup i want to use maschine mk3 routed into Traktor S8 as live deck.

But when I route sound from maschine main output into the line input on S8 i get ALOT of noise/hum.

I'm using a new cable. And when i route the maschine main output to a mixer everything is fine with no noise. Also, the noise is lower when i use ac to power the maschine, but still it's too loud to use.

    Any clues what's going on?

It is for certain a ground loop and /or PSU ground noise. But this is not always easy to cure. If the cables between maschine and traktor are balanced (3 pin/wires) disconecting ground on both left and right might cure it.
Unbalanced might also work with removed ground.
You could also try a DI with ground lift. I use a cheap 2 channel Behringer for this on my Novation circuit, which has the same problem and this fixed it 100%.

I not using balanced cables, I think.Only two wires en each L R cable.

I feel like something must be broken - this just cant be right on modern equipment, right?

No not broken, it is just physics. If you search for ground loop or psu noise on the RME forum you will get plenty results, explanations and possible solutions. Even their gear is not immune, none is.

Just to be clear, the S8 works completely noise-free stand-alone - I did'nt mention that earlier.

Still, you think psu noise is the reason for the noise when i connect the mashine mk3?

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Audio Engineering

Ground loops can occur very easily in an audio chain if you are not careful. Doubly so whenever you connect USB cables to something that also connects to the audio chain.

First of all, make sure that all your equipment gets its electricity from the same socket. Use an extension cord with enough sockets so that all your gear feeds from the same source. If this does not solve the problem, you need to dig in deeper; disconnect all audio and USB cables, one by one until you find the connector which is causing the problem. When the culprit is found, real troubleshooting can begin. Usually this might even involve purchasing appropriate isolator equipment (either for USB or for audio). But make sure all your electricity is sorted first, in a best case scenario that will already solve the problem.
