I have a lot of problems with adjusting gain or EQ in a cue track because I can't preview the way the two tracks will actually sound against each other with the crossfader in the middle, or say, with the A/B levels at a certain specific spot. This means I accidentally have tracks come in with too high or low gain, or with overpowering bass that at first needs to be filtered out a little.

All I've got are the two knobs by the headphone jack for the cue level ratio. This doesn't really help with my problem.

Anybody have solutions or suggestions to dealing with this?

I've actually gotten used to using autogain over the last year. This doesn't always work perfectly but a quick look at the waveform should kinda tell you how loud the track is.
If the waveform peaks to the full height, it's Loud! If it is about half it's low. Somewhere in between it's fairly normal.
This can vary with types of tracks and files but is a quick assumption.
There are other adjustments for the headphone cue and how you set your autogain, but that will be personal preference and some experimenting.
Also I use the spectrum color for the waveform it shows the frequency of the tracks. For instance the red is going to be hard bass drums (lows), blue is hats percussion, vocal,(mid). Knowing that can tell you how to set you eq for the incoming track.
And this is all done with a quick glance, before listening at all.

    Hope this helps.
