Microsoft Surface Book - Traktor 2.11 Freezing and needs hard reboot.

Hello, I just got a Surface Book that I was hoping to use to DJ but am having some issues with Traktor Pro 2.11 on it.

I'm using a Denon MC3000 as a controller only, and a NI Audio DJ 2 as an audio interface.

After an hour or two, Traktor has been freezing on me. Sometimes it just fully stops playing audio, and other times the screen freezes but audio still plays for a minute or so.

I'm not able to close Traktor, I had to hold the power button on the laptop to fully re-boot it. This happened during a gig last week and luckily I had a track ready to play off my phone! Still had about 10 excruciating seconds of embarrassing silence because of the freeze

So I'm not sure if the laptop is to blame, or maybe the controller or interface. Any ideas?

Anyone out there using a Surface Book without any issues? What interface/controller are you using if so?

I've had issues with Surface Pro 3 & Serato... similar experience to what you describe above.
I have not looked into this further, as Serato is blaming their Rane/3rd party SL box drivers & issues a warning about Surface devices, which I find ridiculous....
But I have a hunch it's Surface's aggressive power management at fault here and it shutting off HDs when not accessed during a few minutes (i.e. while a long track is playing from memory after being loaded...). Which causes realtime audio applications issues when the HD isn't fast enough in waking up & supplying the to-be read data when loading a track...
Can you confirm your lockup was during loading a new track after a while of inactivity ?
Just a hunch though and not thoroughly tested. I thought I'd throw it out there.

Wondering if you guys found a solution for this, or are still running into this issue. I'm also working on a Surface Book and JUST ran into this issue. I would be playing and Traktor would just freeze after about half an hour or so. I tried reinstalling drivers, and so far so good, but I've only tested for about an hour. Going to try to go for a longer set in the AM.

 

Quick search gave some issues seems the Surface is not behaving for other audio applications as well.
A couple different comments mention an issue with dedicated drivers for speakers and mic conflicts.

"I use my surface pro 3 in music production for fun sometimes (using it to write this). The main issue I've found is that microsoft added separate drivers for headphones and speakers, so if you want to switch between them, you need to open asio4all while your daw is running, switch the active drivers, then reset your daw. I'm using bitwig studio, so I don't know how FL handles things."

Not Traktor but definitely an audio related issue.

 

I'm running the NI S8 on my Surface Book I7 (500gb w. graphics card). I had this issue, it was happening every time I used traktor. Contacted the Microsoft Surface help centre, they did a remote access, updated some firmware and drivers (Drivers were up to date already from what I could tell).
It has not crashed since! Have not used it a great deal yet as it was only a few weeks ago.
Now just need to fix my latency/crackle issue. Thought the firmware update had fixed that too but apparently not. Ive got the buffer set to 20 20.4ms (max) and still crackling. Such a painful thing, going to lodge a ticket with NI so fingers crossed.
Thanks for the head up Zephry, Ive read about this speaker/mic issue and it was effecting the headphone jack on the surface. I'm still getting a little crackle when listening to beatport on the surface book although nothing like before they did the update. So weird.
Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated.

 

Hi, I have also had this issue a number of times, I am using Traktor Scratch with control Vinyl and Z2 & F1.
I have Surface Book i7 16gb Ram. I am using ASIO4ALL and hopefully all drivers are up to date !
It freezes / locks up like Scifctn mentions and only a reset will restart, it happens at no particular time during a set or while doing any specific functions, unfortunately no recordings or cue points are therefore saved after the restart.
I switch off Wi Fi and Bluetooth, and also stop any antivirus / Windows Defender running.
I have used Latency Mon, which highlights 2 drivers.
Any advice i'd be grateful.

 

Hey guys, I just bought a Surface Book with performance base. Maxed out. And got pretty pissed off when it crashed on me twice. After reading this and someone mentioned the hard disk shutting off, I did a search on how to unlock the laptops adavanced power modes. They are hidden now for some reason. I had to do this to my old laptop. Anyway, I found a way to do it. I changed it so that the disc never turns off. Hopefully it works. I also charged it so that at least while it's charging, it runs at full power 100% of the time. Hopefully this is a solution that works for us.

I'm going to try and get traktor to run of the integrated processor. Speaking of which, can anyone tell me how to do it?

 

Well, that wasn't it. My Surface just crashed and rebooted by itself. I didn't even Traktor opened for even 5 minutes. Heck, nothing was playing. I think I'm going to return the surface and get a MacBook pro.

 

Little update, I tried again and I made it a whole 40 minutes lol I waited and it looked like it tried to recuperate itself but no. This is ridiculous. I was able to end traktor with the task manager though. No need to reboot the laptop.

 

could you explain again, not sure we got it right .. did Traktor crash again, or why did you end with task manager ?.

 

Traktor Crashed again. I was able to move the mouse down to the task bar, right click, open the task manager and end traktor. Since traktor was full screen, there was no was to minimize it. Before, I would have to perform a hard reset of the laptop. The only difference was that this time I had my USB mouse connected and was able to move the cursor.

 

Victory! I changed the latency settings a bit and I was able to record a 68 minute mix with no problems at all. These are my settings. Process Buffer 512 samples, USB buffer 4ms, output latency I didn't touch, it's 18.0ms processing state, streaming. Sample rate is grayed out so I couldn't edit it. But it says 4800hz. I hope this fixes everything. I'm still taking my old laptop to my gig on Friday though. I don't trust traktor on the Surface Book just yet.

 

Folks, even its a different topic, i feel you are the right guys to ask..

a lot of Traktor DJ user (iOS), loving iPad touchschreen on DJ'ing but missing Traktro Pro functionalities, are thinking about the alternative to use a MS Surface with Traktor Pro.

So my questions:
- beside the issues above (solution seems to be tricky but possible), do you recommend a Surface for TPro ??
- TPro on Win10 tablets, we struggle with a simple issue: the TPro song browser does not allow scrolling via swiping gestures on song list, also droping files into desk not possible. Am i doing anything wrong .. or do you have same issue with the MS surface ??

Mine is still crashing regularly after trying a lot of the different methods mentioned above.

 

Same here guys, Surface book with exactly the same problem, traktor crash after 30-60 minutes of use.

I have seem to narrowed my issues down and now my Surface Book i7 16GB doesn't crash , ... so far !
I suggest going through theses 3 tutorials carefully, they may repeat themselves in places, but seemed to have done the trick.
my latency Mon, is now only showing:
Wdf01000.sys - 0.5 ms
ntoskrnl - 0.19 ms
storport - 0.15 ms
