    Hi,

I have had the idea of starting as a DJ for a long time now. I have played at some friends on the computer just using Traktor, but I quickly realized that I have to get a controller.

I am currently looking at two controllers Vestax VCI-100 and American Audio VMS4 - what are the good and bad things about these? I am looking for an all-in-one controller - so are there any other good alternatives around the same price (so not NI Kontrol S4 ;D)

It will be used for Traktor.

    Thanks in advance!

the VCI 100 is not an all in one controller, it does not have an audio interface. it's equivalent is the VCI 300 which is much more expensive.

The american audio seems to be really cool for its price and gives you direct 4 decks control. You can also check the Reloop Digital Jockey series

The new VCI100 (mk2) has a soundcard if I'm not mistaken (can't remember its price)
    oups, here we go: http://www.djtechtools.com/2010/10/01/vestax-vci-100-mk2-vci100/

Don't expect high quality from the VSM4.

because they have a soundcard....? that's news to me.

I started with the Behringer BCD3000 and loved it! It is all in one and has a good soundcard. Only drawback was that you can't use the MIC jack at the same time; had to connect to another mixer in order to use my microphone. Other than that, the I used the BCD3000 for 18 months before upgrading to the Numark Mixdeck.

Vestax VCI-100 vs. American Audio VMS4

what's strange here is the tremendous differences between your given choices...one has 2 channels, the other has 4...one has an interface, the other doesn't

Basically the case with "any" MIDI device decision is: what do you want to do with it...and...can i do it with the # of buttons/knobs/faders/etc. given?

As for your given choices, the Vestax has been out longer so is a proven performer with lots of user support and available configurations. American Audio isn't necessarily a bad name brand...but they've spent the vast majority of their DJ history in offering "budget" DJ products. The VMS4 is an interesting and impressive new product, jumping into the VMS4 doesn't come without risk. It may be great, or it might be crap...too new to say for sure.

I'm certain we would all be glad to make suggestions for you, but in order to do so it would help if you can post your BUDGET and your basic NEEDs...and toss in a few OPTIONAL WANTs.

but in the meantime, i say take a quick look at the Numark Mixtrack (also available in a $200 PRO model with built-in soundcard). it's not the best controller option out there, but at $150 it won't break the bank and will handle all your basic needs.
