Ok so I am running TSP timcode vinyl and am looking into MIDIcontrollers and have a couple questions.

I am running the Audio 4 DJ with a 2 channel mixer and 2 Technic 1200s and my macbook with TSP, what is the best way to connect/integrate a MIDI controller into my setup? Would I connect it straight to my labtop via USB?

For example, how would I connect the Kontrol X1 into my current setup and what are some cheaper alternatives for a controller that will allow me to control Traktor FX, Cue points and looping.

Thanks in advance guys. I'm totally excited for all my new NI gear! :D

yeah just connect to lappy via midi(make sure its a 2.0 port for Kontrol X1)

if you need knobs and pads for cue triggers and fx control you could get a Trigger Finger by m-audio for cheap (under 200) but the quality isn't as nice. i just got the x1 and it's sick. if you've felt the quality of the Maschine - its the same as that.
in the long run - X1 is worth it for about 100 more than the trigger finger; you get led's that communicate whats active, it comes readily mapped for you. just would be soooo much easier. plus its sexier:cool:

Hey dude, so most MIDI controllers including the Kontrol hooks directly to my laptop? So I will have the Audio 4 DJ in one USB port and my MIDI contoller in the other USB port right?

    right

as you can see my status is forum newbie. if there are any other pointers or tips - maybe a moderator or tech wizard will chirp in to confirm.

i'd say that should work fine. i used timecode vinyl and a trigger finger before and it was fine. that was with torq tho - so audio 4 dj should be fine. if you want 4 decks, you need the audio 8 dj for external mixing otherwise your running mono sound out of the audio 4.

I am a big fan of the eks OTUS that I use as a MIDI controller.

The main thing I like about the OTUS is its versatility in a club setting. It fits right on top of the existing turntables and te built-in sound card is nice as it removes the necessity of my Audio 8 DJ unless I want to use timecode. It is also very customizable.

But if you are already using and plan to continue using the Technics with timecode it's unnecessary since the platter would be unused.

I would probably vote the the Kontrol in your situation as well. And yes, for the most part any MIDI device you will buy will be USB. Some old school ones might be 5 pin MIDI but I don't know of any they are selling. And the majority of them do not have built-in soundcards so they would remain independent of your existing Audio wiring setup.
