Studio would be a nice upgrade from the Mk1 & Mk2 controllers if it offered more pads, say 4 rows of 6... giving us 24 pads... similar to a 25 key controller. dedicated octave buttons would be nice as well. That would also open the door for unlimited sounds in a group. (personally I think unlimited patterns & groups should have been a Studio only feature).

Why? The Studio has exactly the same group buttons and pad layout as the MK1 and MK2, and utilises them in exactly the same way

Incompatibility between different hardware versions (because of more pads) would make add-on kits kind of a nightmare.

Just my opinion, but the studio needs something else to make it stand out. 24 pads as opposed to 16 pads could be seen as a more "pro" feature, allowing you instant access to 8 more sounds. If used to play pitched instruments, the extra pads would get you two complete octaves to play your melodies & harmonies.

The 64 pads of Push would be ideal, but we'd have to give up too much of what's already there.

I don't see why. The add ons would just leave the extra pads blank. The studio user can add sounds to those pads from the new library, if they wish.
