Yes, you can connect a USB thumb drive or external USB hard drives to the MPC Live...no computer necessary. BUT...if you want to later format your drive, you will have to put it into controller mode and use your computer.

You can also use your midi controller (keyboard) connected directly to the Live without the need for a computer:
    1. MIDI controller to record MPC Keygroup program tracks (MPC comes with 'The Vault 2' with various instruments)
    2. MIDI controller to record MIDI Tracks using external sound modules (dusted off my Emu Mo Phatt)
    3. Connect a keyboard workstation to use as a controller and sound source with the MPC sequencer

Can Justin Bieber program using the touch screen on live or x?

The MPC Live has no CV outputs. When selecting a CV track on the MPC Live, the touch screen will display "This hardware has no CV ports"

Lol. Please enlighten me to your music experience and awards? Why should I care what you think? I'm pretty sure I have vastly more experience making records than you. Truth is hard to accept I know.

There have been no changes to 3rd party VST support. 1.9 and 2.0 work the same.

MPC Software supported Program changes since 1.0 and Program and Bank Changes since 1.2. You can send Bank and Program changes to external synths to change patches. These are saved per track so when you load your projects, it will recall your synth patches.

Around 1.7 or 1.8, automation was improved. You can now draw in / record Program change automation which will change the patches of your external synths or plugins when supported.

Sweeter if Akai will add the Event List Editor / Step Edit to the touch interface MPCs.

This feature was not include in the MPC Software 1.0. This made the MPC Ren the first MPC ever not to have this feature. It was later added in 1.6 I believe. But then the MPC Touch was released with the feature missing from the hardware. Now this feature only exists in the GUI which I find annoying.

    Jah,

Questions about the Live. I'm interested in using the live to record guitar/bass/keys.

    1) Is it safe to assume that the 8 audio tracks have the same functionality you would find on a multitrack?
    2) The Akai site says that the Live has line, instrument and mike level inputs. Have you tried running a mic or instrument into the inputs? How is the sound quality?
    3) Is there quantize available for recorded audio?
    4) How does the quality of the converters seem? Similar to what was on the MPC 1K and 2500? Better? Worse?

    Thanks!

    1. Multi-track audio recording and playback is possible. As I type this, these are RAM-based tracks. I see these as more as a sketch-pad or something that you will use for live performance. I would use the MPC Live in standalone mode for higher track count and complete music production.

Audio tracks come with some basic editing features to include nudge, slice, copy, duplicate, insert, and delete. Audio tracks can be warped (tempo sync'd to sequencer). You can also bounce your MPC Drum/Keygroup (and plugins in controller mode) tracks to audio tracks.

    2. I don't believe the Akai site lists that specification. MPC Live has line and phone level inputs. The MPC X has mic, line, and phono level inputs.

    3. Punch in and punch out recording is supported. You can nudge audio regions and they will snap to the quantize settings of your tracks.

    4. The sound quality is subjective. To my ears, the converters do not add any color to your sound. The converters, in my opinion, sound equal or better than the MPC 1K, 2500, and 5000.

Hope I was able to answer your questions.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated!

I (hopefully) attached a screenshot from Akai's website about point 2. See 5th bullet point down.

The Akai site won't give me a direct link, but if you go to the main page (http://akaipro.com/akai) there is a banner at the top that says "Separate From The Pack - Standalone" with a picture of the Live and X. Click on that, and scroll down to the Live and click more info. It has the screen I posted. Let me know if you can't find it. I took a screen shot of the banner, but the NI forum won't let me attach it for some reason.
