I just discovered a neat id3 feature last night. I used to have my genres tagged like this:

    Chill, Dub, World
    Psy, Progressive, Techy
    etc...

So in Media Monkey, my genre list would look like this:

    Chill, Dub, World
    Psy, Progressive, Techy
    etc...

The trick is to use a semicolon to separate the genres:

    Chill; Dub; World
    Psy; Progressive; Techy
    etc...

Then you wind up w/ this genre list:

    Chill
    Dub
    World
    Psy
    Progressive
    Techy
    etc...

This makes much more sense to me, makes it a lot easier to find music.

So I thought to myself, "cool" and updated my traktor library. Unfortunately Traktor doesn't honour the semicolon, and I've now got ~50 messy compound genres, instead of the dozen or so individual genres I've got in MM.

So the actual feature request is: please make the semi-colon work as a separator.

Incidentally, this also should work for Artist field.

    Cheers!

could be simple enough to add to all id3 tags (also release etc) if the underlying architecture supports it.

FLAC and OGG files use vorbiscomment to store metadata (tags), which allows multiple entries for most fields, including multiple genres / styles. foobar2000 shows them separated by a semicolon (';').

I would also like to be able to hide a genre (or several of course) completely, for instance I will not need any of my Goa Psychedelic to show up in search and in the browser when mixing house/electro for example. Also I'd love some sort of "smart playlist" sorta like the smart playlists one can set up in iTunes (with various mutli-options ranging from kbps to length to bpm brackets, genre etc etc...).

Some live updating between lists in iTunes and Traktor could be cool too (as opposed to "importing" them) that way whether you set them up in iTunes or in Traktor they'd always be updated in either software (I guess that'd mean some sort of iTunes plugin would be needed) I tend to find iTunes easier to use when preparing/organizing my tracks.

! Complete iTunes support could also mean that Artwork/covers would match possibly ?

HUGS lol (Yeah I'm in a killer mood, that happens).

I agree that having at least all availabe tags would be great and adding custom one even better. But in the meantime:

I am assuming that this means that Traktor will recognise a comma as a separator? If this is true then at least for MM users how about this: MM will allow separators to be specified so has anyone tried specifying a comma in MM - OK it's not the standard but might help until we get Traktor conforming.

I don't know what implications this might have but I will test to see...

Ok now tested, MM works as expected and respects the new separator BUT sadly Traktor doesn't. My misunderstanding I thought it might respect the comma as a separator but apparently not.

What a shame, so it's back to using crates and playlists which is a nuisance because it means lots of extra work that is in effect duplication of what's already done in MM.

Unless someone has any other ideas?
