Multiple outs versus Multiple instances of Kontakt

What is the difference on system resources between running 12 instances of Kontakt versus running one instance with 12 out? Is it that much of a difference? I would load the same instruments into a multi that I would into multiple instance of Kontakt.

I have a two-year-old quadcore PC, 8 GB of ram (maxed) and an SSD. Software is Sonar with Kontakt 5.5.

    Thanks!

Depends on the DAW. Some work better with less instruments per instance, some not. Try it both ways, see what works better for you.

Generally speaking, each instance of Kontakt does have a bit of RAM overhead, so if you can do it in one instance of Kontakt, I think it'll generally be more efficient, however, there shouldn't be a massive difference between the two approaches.

One instance of Kontakt is about 80ish MB of additional overhead, so that's not too terrible I'd say. Big libraries have much more overhead than that (graphics, modulators, number of groups and effects loaded in the instrument all play a huge part in this).

Hey would you know for Sonar which method is more suitable? In terms of CPU load and not much in terms of RAM.

I don't use Sonar so can't really tell you. Experiment!
