Hey guys... new Maschine user here.... Pretty fun tool this one, but one problem is that theres tooooo many sounds right now. Before im used to the sounds, i cant seem to find the sounds i need. I want to make a simple deep house beat, and the programming, shuffling etc isn't the problem. I just cant seem to find the right sounds. Could some one help me in the right direction?

What im aiming for is something like Trentemöllers "In progress" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMMN0keSDSU

I would appreciate any help getting tips in what sounds to use, especially the kick and the snare sound.

    thanks!

Tweak 'til you hear it! When I first got my Maschine not long ago I thought "hmm there's NOT as many sounds as a I thought there would be" in certain categories but all was revealed when I realised how much you can mess with each sound.

Find some similar sounds then work from there. Great tune but doesn't sound like there's anything there that isn't coming out of a normal sample library, it's just tuned to perfection, fx, filters etc.

There's some great one shots for this kind of thing though, sample>one shots> clicks, crackle glitch etc

As for kicks and snare, mess with what's already there, you'll find it :)

Chances are you wont find exactly the sound your looking for at any given time, but there are a few things you can do to narrow your search down a bit. First select the categories you're looking for in the browser, this narrows your search right down depending on how specific you want to be. Next, audition each one in turn, and if one is close but doesnt make the cut, don't just move on. Listen to the sound carefully and think about why it's not quite there and then you instantly know what tweaking you need to do to get it right, ie. bassdrum sounds too thin, use EQ on the lower frequencies or use saturation, or snare sounds too long, use envelope shaping to cut the tail off at a point where you like it. Also if one is too high pitched, try using detuning to get the sound at the right pitch and tweak on. What's mainly important though is not how each individual sound is sounding, but how they all sound as a group when playing together, and more importantly how it sits in the mix. Sometimes you may find your drums sound great alone but can falter in the full mix. So yeah as marzy says, tweak tweak tweak until the beats sound good in your mix.

Thnx guys... have been messing around today and have ended up with some nice stuff, layered kicks that have thump, but nothing near trentemöllers amazing work. I aint trying to rip it off or anything, just like that kind of sound since its so compact and tight! :D

    an addition to mdf25's suggestion:
use the browser attributes to mark your favorite sounds!
add an attribute to the browser, e.g. 'potential'
while browsing the content, tag all interesting sounds with this attribute
you can come back to these sounds later by just searching for this attribute:)

hmm.. never thought about tagging.. like making a favorites list... i think the problem is the massive amount of sound... having to listen through all these 700 kicks makes my ears blead... heh, well, im more into adding the sounds quick and then puting more work on the track.. thanks all of you

Seen as you mention things sounding compact and tight, using the 'sample' button on sounds and shortening the end points can sometimes sound good for that kinda stuff. Just one way, but probably not the most recommended ;)

trouble is you do need to put some time in to listen and learn what sounds good for your projects.

try the Analog section, also look at the Artist Kits and pick artists that might be close to your work.

do a little bit each day, maybe up to 1 hour of listening to individual sounds. and do this in context, meaning program a patterns and go through kicks as the pattern runs.

you need to remember that an artist like Trentemöller will have spent a great deal of time on the sounds. they are as important as the patterns.

why not just sample one of his kicks like everybody else!

Since you can sample in Maschine I would imagine this would be very easy to do.

Dont get hung up too much on creating kicks, most people just sample.
