Undoubtedly the sound quality is better for BANDSTAND due to sample size. I can also accept that for certain types of live use - say top 40 covers, country or jazz performances, that GM is fine and for that kind of use a bigger size GM wave set is better than more instruments.

However there are others like myself who would benefit from the wider XG standard where arrangers are used as a tool for composition and inspiration, then the range of sonic possibilities presented by XG become important. Like i said before, not all instruments need huge sample size anyway. The dance styles on my XG box make use of effects etc to manipulate the sound in ways one simply cannot do with the GM standard.

When I compare, say the typical Pop/R&B and dance GM styles available through Band In A Box versus the styles available through XG and other arrangers that have access to a much bigger sonic palette, then it becomes clear that GM simply cannot achieve anything near to an "authentic" sound. To my ears the result is often "cheesy".

bear in mind that my thoughts are really for those modern styles that focus more on electronic instruments - synths, 808 drums etc and "heavy production techniques" as opposed to styles intended to emulate say a 5 piece band of real musicians.

    Hi all,

yup, first things first. fix the engine, get sounds to load faster, improve the current library, add XG sounds to the drum sets and the like.

more effects and more sounds are a major piece of work that we will have to look at for the next big version. not a priority in my mind.

    Best,
    Markus

Just to let you know Markus that Ableton have responded to my alert:

    "Hello George,
we will check this as soon as the box arrived.
    Dom Wilms
    ableton ag"

and now it is up to you/NI to get this thing happening.

I noticed that Bandstand allows you to record your midis into wavs using the Bandstand sounds. Is this process batchable? That would be very important to me.

    Thanks

    Hi Mike,

you would have to use a third party tool like Autohotkey on XP or Automator on OSX to batch this.

note that program changes within the song are currently ignored when rendering to audio.

Any news on the Live front Markus?
Have you been in contact or has there at least been any contact with them regarding the issues raised in this post?
Am very keen to get an updated Bandstand that works more efficiently in Live.

    cheers
    George

    Hi George,

thanks for checking back. NAMM came in between but it sounds like Ableton has everything there now to test it. I hope to have a definite answer by mid of next week.

btw. I did some tests with Battery 2 and could not find huge performance differences between VST Cubase and VST Live.

is anybody using Live on the Mac with AU? did you see performance differences between Logic AU and Live AU?

    Best,
    Markus
