Just when I had resigned myself to going over to the dark side and replacing my ailing G4 Powerbook 667 with a Windows laptop, the Mac Book Pro arrives to save the day. I dare anyone to advise me against it...

    Open fire!

As soon as enough apps are ported over (nudge, nudge), I'll be making the leap too.

Im not too keen on getting new technology as soon as it comes out.
Im going to wait a while for all the impatient people who got one to find all the bugs in it and for Apple to and NI to release updates and then I will be all over it.

First, in spite of the hype about Rosetta it can't run everything. It apparently does worst with highly optimized realtime software like digital audio applications and plugins. The current PowerPC versions of Apple's Pro applications like Logic, FinalCut Pro and Soundtrack Pro don't run under Rosetta. So you may need to wait and get updates of any audio applications or plugins to Universal binaries before they will even run on the new systems. Most likely only the latest versions of software will be updated to Universal binaries. Some of these may be free of low cost upgrades, but others may require purchasing upgrades to latest or next versions.

Second your devices like MIDI controllers, audio I/O boxes, control surfaces will mostly likely require updated drivers. Discontinued products may not get updated.

Third only Universal or Intel plugins will run in Universal or Intel applications. Only Universal or PowerPC plugins will run in PowerPC applications running in Rosetta mode.

Lastly, the backup plan of running Windows on the new Macs won't work because of an incompatibility between Windows XP and the new systems' bootstrapping system.

If you want to make music it seems like waiting is the best plan for these systems.

Don't get me wrong the new systems are probably fine for iLife, Word etc. But digital audio... not ready yet.
