I've sent this to NI Cust Support, and gotten the auto-reply but no answer after 3 days. Maybe they're taking the whole week off, so I'm going to ask here whether anyone has seen my problem and knows a fix.

I bought a new PC. Installed Sonar 6, K2.2 (K2.0->K2.1->K2.2), and EWQLSO. On the old PC, all worked fine. I load K2 as a VST plug-in in a Sonar project. Although I see K2 respond to the MIDI data, I get no sound back to Sonar. If I display "Outputs" there are none visible in the UI, only the row of buttons and a horizontal scroll bar directly below them. The Output control near the top is showing "Surround 7.1" and if I try to show the dropdown list of options, no list appears, only a small, round, white dot right below the word "Surround," as if that dot was supposed to appear in the non-visible dropdown. (If I load the identical samples in the Kompakt player plug-in that came with EWQLSO, it works fine, so I assume there's no probelm in Sonar or the samples.)

Anyone have an idea of what could be wrong based on my description?

EDIT: After submitting this, it occurred to me to try the DXi version of K2. And the outputs do show up normally there, well sort of. All is fine when I insert the K2 plug-in. Then, if I load a multi I was using before (with several instrument banks and reacreated anew on this PC), the Outputs disappear and no audio gets back to Sonar.

I'm not going to describe here every quirk I found in this test, but there's clearly something screwy going on.

    The questions remains: Any ideas?
    END EDIT

    Thanks,
    John

i don't know Sonar but if you were describing this problem in DP i'd suggest maybe looking at the Audio Bundle assignment in your sequencer.

Thanks for responding. I'm not sure how to translate "Audio Bundle assignment" into Sonarese. But I'm pretty sure the problem is in K2 and not Sonar.

For example, I created a project with 2 MIDI tracks. I assigned the 1st track to K2 and the 2nd track to the EWQLSO Kompakt player, both MIDI channel 1 and both playing the same "instrument," meaning the same samples. Only the 2nd track made a sound. Then I swapped the samplers: now EWQLSO Kompakt was on 1st track and K2 on 2nd track. After the swap, only the 1st track played. That is, the problem is always on the track using the K2 plug-in; the other one works fine.

Because the problem is different when using VST and DXi, Sonar's impementations of the two interfaces could be involved. But why would something in Sonar cause the dropdown from which one selects "st. 1," "st. 2", and "surr 5.1" when the DXi plug-in is loaded instead display only the selection "st. 2.1" and the dropdown is not populated with any selections?

Anyway, still hoping there's some straightforward solution.

All the best and Happy New Years,
    John

    Hi John,

What is it you see that indicates K2 is getting the midi data?

What do the buttons say on them or are they blank? Did any of the buttons say "Add Channel" and if so did you try clicking on this? Was there a button called "Reset Out Map"?

I've only got Sonar-4 and my K2 version is still 2.1.1.001 but I've never seen anything that shows as "Surround 7.1" in K2, only an output modual that says "surr. 5.1". You mention an output control near the top, where exactly is this and what does it look like? This must be something new with K2 2.2.

Did you try the DXi version by just loading one simple instrument?

There is a difference the way the DXi & VSTi outputs show up in Sonar so I think this is normal.

I wish I had something more to offer but based on the info you've given I really don't have a clue.

Happy New Years to you too.

    T.S.

Hey, T.S., thanks for taking the time to help.

    1. I know MIDI data is getting to K2 because of all the following: the small MIDI light flashes, the keys in the UI's keyboard play the correct notes, the Program Change messages are acknowledged within the instrument banks (by changing the name of the instrument at the correct time).

    2. The six buttons do have text: Add Channel, Delete Channel Show Inserts, Edit Effect, Reset Out Map, and a red button with title Make Default. Clicking on any button seems to have no effect.

    3. The Output dropdown list I see is only visible when you click on the plus sign (+) at the right of a loaded instrument or bank. Normally, there would be 3 items in the dropdown list, "st. 1," "st. 2," and "surr. 5.1." So I'm not sure why I'm seeing "Surround 7.1." And when I click on the triangle to drop down the list, no list appears, but a small white circle appears directly below the word "Surround," which I assume is supposed to sit on the dropdown list as a selection indicator.

    4. I have tried loading the DXi plug-in, and it works with a small number of newly loaded instruments, but as I start loading instruments and/or banks it reverts to this no-output mode under circumstances I haven't yet pinned down.

If I have the time later today (Saturday), I'll try rebuilding the multi from scratch in the DXi to see if I can find a way to keep the Outputs. (When I load into the DXi plug-in a multi saved to the hard drive from a VST plug-in, the outputs disappear.)

Thanks again for the time you took to try to resolve this issue.

    All the best,
    John

Did you figure this one out yet? I'm having EXACTLY the same problem with Kontakt 2.2.1 in Sonar 8.01

Andy, it turned out that I was not using the most current version of Kontakt. Once I went to the NI website and downloaded version 2.2.3, the problem went away. I'd suggest you get the free upgrade, as well.

    HTH,
    John
