    What's happening here?

Occasionally, more often than not on first power up, I will load a track into Deck A but when I press Play the Phase Meter bounces continuously left and right (sync button on or off). I can still jog wheel to play back or forth by hand but the track won't run. Track has loaded with BPM showing (known good track) but whilst playing the BPM shows as 0.00

Sometimes I'm able to get it to play by giving the jog wheel a shove in the forward direction, otherwise I might have to re-load or change deck/track till it stops playing up..

Am I inadvertently putting it in some odd mode?

    Thanks....Jason.

    Hey,

Recalibrate your jog wheels. That is gonna help for sure. I had the same problem and many other s4 users to and the solution is to recalibrate your jog wheels.

If you dont know how look up on the Kontrol s4 page and you will find a thread (from a mod) about Recalibrate Jog wheels.

    Hope this helps,

    Cya

Thanks, I hadn't associated this with a calibration issue but I'll give it a go and see how it goes...

Are you using Music Folders instead of Playlists? If so, Traktor initially scans each folder you click on. And, when you immediately load a track from the this folder, it could take some time (approx 12 sec per 100 tracks for me). That's why it's happening "on first power up".

Look at your Status Bar at the bottom and you will see Traktor scanning.

Hi, I had/have the same behavior only it happens in Deck B. I wrote to tech support and this is what they said:

"If you encounter an inconsistent behavior with the S4 controller please try the
    restore feature by going to:
Traktor's Preferences > Traktor Kontrol S4 > Restore Default > Press Default: Restore
-The setup wizard will launch and you may follow the simple setup process.
Note: The restore feature is available in version 1.0.1 or above of the Traktor
Pro S4 software. Updates can be accessed by using the Service Center app or by
    going to Help > Downloads.
In addition you may use the mac uninstaller utility found in the following link :
    http://co.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=freeupdates#Utilities
Remove the program then repair disk permissions running Mac's Disk Utility.
Information on Disk Utility can be found:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452?viewlocale=en_US
Once permissions are repaired, install program."

I use playlists and I recalibrate EVERY time I start the program up and I followed Native Instruments suggestion. It still does it at random times and sometimes at the first track I load into deck B. Glad you were able to make it go again. I have not had that bit of luck. I have to restart and recalibrate. This takes time in a nightclub enviroment and is very stressful. If in fact it is the jog wheels, then they are by far too sensitive for nightclub use. Every time I see the lightman jumping around, I break out into a cold sweat....and need a beer...since he jumps around all night, I need a lot of beer.

That's what I am saying. Even if you do everything recommended, it still happens. And worst of all, it seems random. I'm looking for a better solution than re-installing the software constantly and recalibrating the decks all night long (seems to help, could be my imagination though) to ward off whatever devil is living in my set-up.

Saturday night, I had my S4 with cds AND my Firebox and nanoKontrol ready to go in case I needed to switch to TSP. Kind of funny, even though it is not. Like I said before, beer helps.

Ive got the same problem. It appears totally randomly, only on deck B...
Last weekend I was djing at a party and right in the beginning, the thing just WOULDNT play a track on deck b. Always the same as you described...Jog Slider jumping up and down, and what nobody wrote yet, the LOAD button on deck B is orange, too.
My workaround is just spin and spin and spin the deck until it finally starts playing... always works...
strange enough, last weekend, after the first problems, it did not happen again for the next 8 hours! Today I was playing a little bit with the S4... same story. Deck B is stopping all the time... I recognized some really strange things about it:

    I load a Track into deck B : Plays.
I hit the play button to stop the deck, i want to jog the wheel to a certain position, to set a cue point (maybe at the beginning of the track, so i jog back). The moment i touch the jog wheel, the orange LOAD button flashes up, and the deck wont be able to start again by hitting play. It just wont. Only the sync meter slides from left to right. WTF ? It now happens ALL the time.

wow, recalibrating actually solved the problem for me...for now at least

The LOAD button illuminating is just to tell you that scratch mode is engaged (ie, the platter is pushed down to allow scratching). So if the light is on even when you're not touching the platter, then you have a jogwheel problem.

If you have the same issue even after calibration, maybe try turn the unit upside down while it is stuck and see if it unsticks? Just a thought on how to determine if its h/w or s/w. This is a h/w suggestion, but seeing as I never encounter this issue, I cant test it.
