I'm not a turntablist and nor do I scratch, but that could be fun....I guess. The main purpose of Traktor Scratch for me is liking the tactile feeling of controlling from actual decks and we all like looking like rock stars with a deck on either side. But I have a few questions.

    1. If you are already an owner of Traktor Pro and own a compatible audio interface the only option I have seen is an upgrade for about $350. Seems kind of a steep when you're just talking about a slight software tweak, some encoded media, and maybe a couple cables (not really sure on that one). Am I wrong or missing something here?

    2. With the release of better deck MIDI controllers:

Er, like this bad boy http://eks.fi/product.php?p=products&id=34

Would that completely eliminate the need for encoded media and traditional decks and you'd still have full control of everything and the traditional feeling?

Just trying to be forward thinking here.

If the 'compatible audio interface ' is the Audio 8 DJ soundcard or a Traktor Scratch Certified Mixer then yeah thats the only option.
Expensive? Well its often said that all you get is a software tweak to enable timecode control , id say its a pretty big tweak. As for the cables, they are like nothing on earth and really arent 'just a couple of cable' they are pretty special.

You can already use controllers like the VCI to emulate turntables.
The Otus 'looks' pretty impressive and yeah it can replace timecode but as for replacing 'traditional' turntables theres still a long way to go in my opinion. Im certainly no vinyl snob i love controllers and im willing to give any new idea a blast but until you get the platter running under your fingers on a digital controller theres nothing as good as using decks.

Are you only referencing vinyl here because I've never spun vinyl and don't plan to, much respect to DJs who do. So with that said do you think something like the Otus could easily substitute for CDJs and encoded CDs? If you read the specs there's even some deck emulation features on it that a lot of the CDJs don't even have.

Let's say my setup consisted of a Korg Zero 4 mixer and a couple Otus controllers, which you can even A/B a single Otus to control 2 decks. Is there any reason I would want to upgrade to Traktor Scratch?

..go for the Otus or any other MIDI controller and never mind any vinylists reminiscent thoughts.

I have played with vinyl mself and i do not miss it a bit.

If you never have even played vinyl, it´s really not worth while thinking about it. Check out some contollers and choose the one(s) you like the most to play with. That´s the most important thing. Have fun!

So nothing gained by upgrading to Scratch if I am transitioning from CDJs?

I might go with a Dascratch controller for now because the Otus is a little hefty on the wallet, especially for what it is/isn't. And at some point in 2009 they are going to release the Otus Raw which will be a little more stripped down and won't include an audio interface so it should be cheaper.

it does not just look impressive, it is amazing :p and i do share your opinion partly on the spinning, but if there is no needle on the record I personaly cant be botherd(lookin at some Denon CD/controller models) and it dosent give the same feeling to it anyway with the spinning platter, so I'd take the Otus and actualy even a CDJ(still dont like them, to plasty imo) anyday over the spinning platter.

@ Beats me: if u r goin the controller without soundcard way, there might even be an idea to get the Audio 8/Scratch anyway as its an exelent soundcard, and ull have more options to play with.
And imo the Otus beats any CDJ by miles.

Ah, you see thats why i thought you were using decks. I thought you were replacing turntables not cdjs. My boob. I misunderstood the original question .

Yeah ive no doubt that theres no point goin to vinyl if you are a competent cdj dj especially if you have never used vinyl.

Im not a reminiscent vinyl dj so dont misread my post Electromoon.
Like i said im not a vinyl snob.

I havent used an Otus but id love to . Do they replicate the feel of cdjs ?
