Quick question... What is THE best Mac OS for running Traktor Pro?
I am currently running 10.5.6 on a 2.16Ghz Macbook and was wondering if I'd get better performance/stability out of TPro using 10.4.11?

Stay with the latest Mac OS X

In my experience Apple's Operating Systems get stabler and perform better with each minor release. The joining of the Unix and Mac worlds plus Intel processors is an ongoing process. If you have an Intel based Mac I recommend 10.5.6 The main reason to go back to 10.4 would be some older applications and drivers, but Traktor is now built for 10.5.

Most problems I had with Traktor 3 were related to limited resources and a large library.

In my experience there's but one mayor unresolved issue for music production and DJing on Mac OS X 10.5.x: syslogd. But depending on your set-up you may not be affected by it. Unfortunately syslogd is not as easy to turn off as Time Machine. With 10.5.6 I experience the annoying stutter less often, but it still there and still equally annoying.

Tip 1: Try to have sufficient free RAM (If it gets low the system may even start swapping) and sufficient free space on your harddisk. Monitor system memory and disk activity in the Activity Monitor (maybe not during a gig...)
Tip 2: There's a lot of managing taking place in modern OSes, so run your system for a while in the same configuration before the gig as you will use during the gig. This gives the OS time to settle, build indices, optimize stuff, ..)
Tip 3: Use the latest drivers for your audio interface. Use reasonable latency times.
Tip 4: Keep your music library for Traktor trim (T3 uses a lot of memory if you have large libraries) and don't use a slow drive for he library. If you use an USB disk, then connect it to a different port as your other devices (Mouse, Controllers etc.)
Tip 5: USB audio can also affect performance. It is important to use a separate port for your audio interface. Avoid using the same port for an external drive and audio. If you use a hub try not to mix USB1.x and 2.0 devices (System Profiler on 10.5 is an excellent help to figure this out)
Tip 6: Avoid running non-Intel applications on Intel Macs (column "Kind" in Activity Monitor, show all processes)
Tip 7: Stop Time Machine or disconnect your Time Machine volume and if necessary tame syslogd during your gig.

On My MacBook Pro I currently have Mac OS X 10.5.6 installed and have not experienced a problem when running the following at the same time: Traktor 3.4 or Traktor Pro, Live with a couple of DSP plugins, Soundflower, VMWare Fusion running Windows Vista Pro SP1, iTunes, Mail, Safari. I have RAM maxed out to 4GB, 2 Cores and use a firewire audio interface (Motu Ultralite).

Is the "Soft Takeover" issue going to be fixed in 1.0.3? I have read the notes on the update status thread but it makes no mention of this being fixed.

IMHO this is a hugely critical flaw and needs to be addressed ASAP. It is my personal No.1 gripe with TSPro and the only major flaw (aside from the key lock crackle) that is not just a result of adjusting the way you work with the software.

I would really like to know about this issue if anyone has any info.

    Hi!

New guy chiming in. I bought TP after fiddling around for a while with T3. I haven't worked with T3 long enough to get "muscle memory" for the different workflow, so for me TP is good.

One thing though: When I search by bpm in a certain playlist, the search results come from the whole collection. Also the range of bpm is ridiculously big. In T3 the results came back only from the playlist I was working in.

    Have I overlooked a setting?

Sorry if this has been asked before

Trying to use simultaneously for midi control the NI Audio Kontrol 1 and Vestax VCI-100. The aim is to use the AK1 for browsing and/or more effects usability. Any help?

What do you mean by "soft takeover"?

Soft takeover is where.. well, imagine you have a knob on slider in a different position to how it is on the screen- like when you hit sync, and the pitch slider on your controller is then different to the one on-screen. Soft takeover would let you move your physical slider to "sync" up with the one on screen without messing up the setting, taking over as sit catches up, so to speak.

But don't quote me on that, I seem to be sleep-deprived :)

yeah that's it. the common use in TP is to control a function on multiple decks with the same physical control.

eg: I have pot I am using for Lows and want that to control deck A and deck C Lows. I set a modifier that switches this between A and C.

    1. Both A and C are set to 12 o'clock.
    2. I use modifier and switch from A to C.
    3. I turn the pot down to 9 o'clock which decreases the lows on deck C.
    4. I then switch back to A using the modifier
    5. A is set to 12 o'clock in the software but the physical pot is at 9 o'clock.
    6. As soon as i move the pot it sends a midi signal to Traktor and adjusts the software to mirror its physical position causing the Low for track A to jump to 9 o'clock.
    This is bad!

Soft takeover should fix this problem. With soft takeover engaged when I perform step 6, the software should not react until the hardware returns to its original position (in this case 12 o'clock). Once the hardware has returned to its original position it will then reset and begin to control the software again.

    Hope that explains it.

Have been using Traktor Dj Studio 3 for some time now. Installed the demo of Pro today and it doesn't work with a Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Music card (tracks load but won't play) but works fine with a Maya44 USB card. BTW, both these cards work perfectly with Traktor 3.

How can an upgraded application not work with a bog standard sound card? That indicates to me that there are some bugs in this app that need to be ironed out before I will even consider upgrading. Shame about the loss of Native Mix recording support too, is essential when putting together mix CDs.

    It is?

Who puts together a mix cd that uses that functionality? I think that it's a false representation of who you are and how you mix live imo.

I guess I'm more focused on creating demo's with this post.

Are you nuts? You don't know anything about me or how I use the product! How can you claim that my comment is a "false representation of who I am"? I think you should apologise.

Plenty of Traktor users are pissed that the Native Mix functionality is not present in the Pro version. FYI, the Native Mix function is there precisely for studio work when a mix that is being recorded needs to be interrupted for some reason and then gone back to or a mistake has been made that needs to be corrected.

Please, engage brain next time before touching your keyboard.

Chill out Tiger, maybe if you read my whole post you'd understand.

I'm not saying you're wrong at being upset that NMX has been omitted...personally I could care less, but I understand that there is a huge use for this and it has angered some people.

Now, if you did read my post, you'd understand that my comment was focused on people who create demo's to hand out to clubs. The 'false representation of who you are' is a general 'you', not a specific one towards whitchp. Using NMX to go back and tweak your mix is cheating...cause when you dj live, guess what? You can't go back and edit your mix. Again, focused on demo's!

As for an apology, doubtful. As for engaging the brain, maybe you might want to take some of your advice.

It's unfortunate that you (whitchp) completely misunderstood my post.

I think the words in your original post speak for themselves, you don't need to reinterpret them.

If you don't know how to use the English language to convey your thoughts please stick to DJing and stop writing.

Apart from your apparent bizarre disdain of people who create "demos" for clubs (what's that all about?), you don't seem aware that the entire dance music production industry uses this type of technology in creating mix CDs. What's important in the studio is creating a perfect CD, and the producer often needs to go back and re-edit. How is that "cheating"?

I didn't claim that the Native Mix functionality was useful in live DJing. Go back and read my post, you nut - it says "Shame about the loss of Native Mix recording support too, is essential when putting together mix CDs". MIX CDs get it, not live DJing.

Hey, look on the bright side, with my sound card, I get a kernel panic on startup, unless I forget to unplug it- only with this version of pro, not with previous versions, and not with ableton, traktor 3, vlc or anything else.. :)

Sorry about that Ancipital. I suggest you write a NI tech support ticket. I wrote one for the sound card issue, hopefully NI will read these and address these problems.

    Time to move on.

Totally off topic, but if anyone is interested in a digital version of the Axwell Club remix of the Adele track "Hometown Glory" I finally found a (legal) version on trackitdown.net. The URL is:

    http://www.trackitdown.net/genre/house/track/752759.html

It's a rip from the Hed Kandi The Mix 2009 CD (steady on chilly, don't get overheated if I mention the words Mix CD) but I downloaded it and it plays beautifully. This is such a great tune, it gets a really wild crowd reaction when it comes on.
