I've got a Kontakt template I've used many times, however after adding several NI horns, etc., when I add timpani, it seems no matter which track I'm recording, it seems to add the timpani sound. Is this because the timpani instrument (included with basic Kontakt library) is routed to a group? I cannot seem to figure this out though I've searched high and low. TIA.

Do you use one kontakt instance with many instruments loaded? You can set any Instrument to listen to a specific midi channel maybe timpani is set to omni. You can set it on top of any Instrument on the left top. If you don't see the setting look for a camera icon and next to it is an icon with i inside, click it and you should see midi ch xxxxx.
