Just bought a Retina MacBook Pro fully loaded. My SSD is 768GB. I have 150GB to Windows 8 (for FL Studio). After installing all my mac software, I have 411GB free.

I'm tempted to install Komplete to the internal (something I'd never do with a traditional HDD). Has anyone else tried this? especially in NI's lab (if one exists for this)?

I wouldn't. Think of you daw and Kontakt and OSX for example trying to access the one drive at the same time. It can be done but things will slow down and you'll be limited as to number of tracks. Separate drives are best. Best bet in your case would be to hang a drive off the Thunderbolt port for the speed. 4 terabyte Lacie TB drive for $400.

Agreed. I recently bought a pegasus J4 and installed four Crucial M4 512 SSDs. Working very well here.

Must be nice to have that kind of money - wish I did;) Looks to price out at about $2k US or so for the whole deal.

Are you using it on a Mac and if so, what model Mac? The form factor looks about the size of a Mac mini (I'd be using it on my iMac).

I'm using the 15" Retina MacBook Pro fully loaded. I spent my tax return and some savings on it. But will pay off. Either way, its a write-off.

I am back to this square again. So I bought a Macmini and decided to use the external SSDs with it. So my rMBP is still open for experimentation. If anyone has tried, I'd like to know if you're satisfied with performance. I would be awesome to only need a keyboard and headphones when I travel.

I do exactly that. I'm on a 2015 13" Retina MacBook Pro. All my software is on the same SSD: Komplete 10, Maschine, Komplete Kontrol, Logic. The SSDs on the new rMBPs are extremely fast. About 1.3-1.4 GB/s read and write on mine and over 2.0 GB/s on your 15" rMBP (http://www.macrumors.com/2015/05/21/15-inch-retina-macbook-pro-2gbps-throughput/).

If you'd like to me to test anything out, let me know.

Is it an ssd or the pcie flash ram as the system 'drive'? Two different technologies but I think the pcie flash ram might be faster. It's not unknown that people are using just the internal stuff on laptops and not carrying external drives. Friend of mine over in the DUC (PT forum) regularly does concert recordings with just his 15 inch rMBP with the largest/fastest system 'drive' setup.

I'm not familiar with what "pcie flash ram" is. Could you explain?

The pcie flash is a faster interface than sata, which lends to faster speed,
I'm using the older, early 2013 model, which is Sata SSD. Its still much faster than HDD

If anyone is using heavy Kontakt projects (10 or more Kontakt tracks) on the internal drive, I'd like know how it is working for you.

Macbook Pro Retina 2014 here too ... Komplete 10 Ultimate installed on the internal PCIe SSD ... nothing beats that speed ;)

    Works like a charm.

What is your largest project like? And what buffer size do you use?

My projects aren't that large ... around 20 tracks on average. And interface buffer size is at 256 samples regarding Reaper ... in the interface config I can't choose the sample rate. The Tascam driver is a bit strange, but it works great, especially the bit-accurate driver, which has a better performance than Core Audio. The bit-accurate driver is comparable to Windows ASIO, it's a DAW optimized driver and I use it's defaults in Reaper. Performance rocks even at 24 bit / 96 kHz.

Regarding Macbook SSD performance ... just google for it, maybe search for IOPS too and you will see, that the internal SSD of the newer Macbook Pro models easily outperforms every external SSD. So even much larger projects than mine should be no problem.

    Hi,
I'm considering upgrading from K10 to K10U. But the 512 GB SSD drive on my 13" MBP (late 2013) has only 65 GB left. I think about getting an external SSD drive connected via Thunderbolt. Is that a good idea? Should I install/move all my K10 stuff to the external drive? Is the performance good?
I must say I have serious problems with audio quality running MASCHINE 2.3 (see a post under the MASCHINE forum).

Yes, but it might be not much faster than a good USB 3.0 SSD. OTOH a Thunderbolt SSD doesn't require a USB hub ... I guess you need one of the two USB ports for a keyboard and one for your audio interface?

On my old Sony Vaio I needed to install all K10U libraries on an external eSATA mechanical HDD and the performance is quite ok. An external USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt SSD will be even faster.

I currently use a discontinued thunderbolt enclosure for my mac mini (Pegasus J4)...it works great for Mac but no Windows support. I am considering an upgrade to the BlackMagic Multidock since it's easy to swap drives and supports Windows.

K10U and external Thunderbolt SSD will arrive today. My K10 is installed on my internal drive now but I want to have everything on the external drive. Any advice for how to do this? First install K10U entirely on the external drive and then remove from the internal drive? Or should I uninstall K10 first then reinstall it external and then install K10U?

I would just do a full install of K10U over the existing K10, but choose to install the libraries on the external HDD:

Afterwards you can delete the "old" libraries from the internal HDD, but compare, because on my Windows machine not all libraries were installed on the external disk. One example is Absynth, which is completely on the internal disk.

PS: In case you want to sell the "old" Komplete 10 Standard, it might be a good idea to contact NI Support to deactivate it's serial on your a account and ask if an uninstall is needed or the above method is ok. But if you bought a K10U upgrade, this is not needed / possible, because it's tied to your former version. It only applies to a full version of K10U, not the upgrade. So above method is for the upgrade.

I noticed an oversight with the installer configuration. Ideally, you would want to install all Kontakt libraries on the external, and keep all the Reaktor and Battery content on the internal. But you can't change only the location of the Kontakt libraries as it will force Reaktor and Battery content to move too....at least this is the issue for the Mac installer. So get around that, first I ran the installer and deselect all the Kontakt libraries (not the plugin) and let the installer put the remaining on the system drive. Then, I ran the installer again, only selecting the kontakt libraries (uncheck everything else) and changed the location to the external drive.
