Why only Kontakt libraries on external HDD?

Because the other content is not read-intensive for the target drive. People usually put Kontakt data on another drive to improve performance or save drive space. This won't matter for Battery or Reaktor which use smaller samples that can fit entirely in RAM when in use and the storage size is less than 15GB combined.

Then I would do as I already did and put ALL content on the external drive to save space on the internal and make things easier (for future updates).

You can do that too. I do it differently because some places I travel and can't use the external conveniently. In that situation, I can still use many of other sounds besides Kontakt. Whatever makes your work better..

I think, this is especially interesting for people, who seldom use Kontakt.

You're wastin time doing that. There's a way easier way and that's to just let the installer install everything to your system drive and then move the Kontakt stuff to your samples drive afterwards, pointing Kontakt to the new location of the sample library and then deleting the old library location. Actually for me I'd rather have the Kontakt and Battery samples on an external drive; the only thing I'd keep is the Reaktor ensembles on the system - that's what I do now.

Actually the installer for Ultimate advises against that because simply pointing Kontakt to the new location will not help when the library needs updated. (Been there, done that). The installer will tell you to move the Kontakt libraries back to the original installed location. Five more minutes of my time is worth saving the unnecessary headache when Komplete Kontrol 2 (or 1.5) is released and some libraries may need changes. AND if you have an internal SSD, why waste all those precious write blocks?...300GB of them..:(

They changed that then because at least in Komplete 9 there's no issue with the rare library update that may happen. If you have trim support enabled you're not wasting write blocks.

Every stock SSD in Mac(book)s has Trim enabled, but that doesn't help to get rid of 300 GB samples :D

I hate to say it but I will: you simply do NOT understand the way disk drives work. When you 'delete' a file or data it is NOT deleted from the drive, whether it's an ssd or a spinner. The space that is used is marked as available for the system to use. It's what allows forensics experts to recover data/files that are supposedly deleted or lost. So once again you are NOT wasting write cycles.

I know quite well how they work, but you didn't understand my humour ;) No offence intended!

Maybe but you were STILL spreading false info and a smiley face doesn't make it right. Someone might see what you wrote and think you're right and you weren't.

JBlongz pointed out, that he doesn't want to waiste 300 GB on the internal SSD by installing the libraries there instead on an external HDD. And that has nothing to do with Trim. So where do I spread false information?

You were spreading false information back in post #29 when you said that Trim wouldn't help with getting rid of the 300 gig of samples and that mushroomed with your false interpretation of how ssd's work. If you go back and read through this thread you'd see I said to delete the files from the main drive after moving them to the external drive. When you delete them they're not actually removed from the drive but the areas where the data is stores is marked as usable. So the 300 gig on the internal drive is NOT being wasted.

    But whatever.

What JBlongz and myself tried to say is, that installing the libraries on the internal SSD is a waste of valuable space.

Sorry, I'm tired of discussing this any longer. Anybody, who isn't a complete novice regarding SSDs, should know what garbage collection and trim is. For those being interested in technical details, I would recommend googling for "garbage collection versus trim".

I'm agreeing it's a waste of space on the internal ssd but that space is reclaimed when you 'delete' it after moving the files to the external drive and that's what you are missing. Once you understand that then it's not an issue anymore.

I don't need to understand that ... I KNOW that since a looong time, but it seems you don't want to understand ME and my joke above ;)

PS: Maybe this is all a matter of the fact, that I'm not an English native speaker.

What joke and what's to understand about it? Perhaps you could explain it in detail? This has NOTHING to do with whether a person is a native English speaker or not. I would never go there and it's not cool that you bought that up. That's a poor excuse at best. Technical facts are technical facts and language doesn't enter into it.

My point is, whether trim or garbage collection, its not worth using the write blocks. Also, for those using 3rd party SSDs (like I will be soon), Trim would need to be hacked (not a wise decision), so we would rely on an SSD with quality 'garbage collection' like that provided by OWC. Transcend has an aftermarket SSD, but do not mention any garbage collection feature. They offer a Trim Hack which is not supported by Apple and usually breaks with supplemental updates. FYI

I already did that, so let's just stop this off-topic discussion and concentrate on what's important for the original topic:

It's worth mentioning, that this is only a problem with the OS drive. Apple supports trim for their own OS drives, e.g. on the new Macbooks, and for third party data drives. So there is no longer trim support in Yosemite for third party boot / OS drives.
