I've meanwhile upgraded to NI Komplete 2 & a new G4 eMac - Absynth standalone works without problems here.
Can't tell if Komplete and its version of Absynth would work on my iBook for now ; I've had to ship it back to Apple because of hardware trouble. But am very curious to find out if the Komplete Absynth installer will be different from the Absynth.

Definitely looks like an iBook specific problem...

    ...

Not if the developer tools weren"t installed...

it's not a permissions issue as far as i can tell. i have read/write access to all my absynth files and, for good measure, so does everyone else. i see no change in the situation.

Ok, let's try something. Make a copy and back up your current copy of Absynth 2.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Move your current copy out of that folder--you will replace it with mine, after you modify it. Make sure you have the Developer Tools installed so you can use the Property List Editor.

Download this modified version of my Absynth 2.plist file

    http://www.hyerstay.com/files/Absynth2plist.sit

I have removed my key, serial number and system id, so this file will be of no use to any pirates reading this thread.

Double-click on my .plist file and your .plist file. Copy your key, serial number and system ID to the fields where they belong. You can see where I put text in place of my data.

Also, change the path for InstallDir to the location of Absynth on your machine.

You may also want to change the AB SampleRate to 44100 depending on your audio setup.

Close and save the file, then put it in your Preferences folder.

Try running Absynth and report back with what happens. I have not tested this, so it is an experiment.

BTW, mine is set up for an 828mkII, with a MOTU Fastlane and an Evolution X-Session.

    Regards,

    Jason

I'm also having this problem - not even just standalone - everytime I try to load it into tracktion as well

I am also using a G3 powerbook (upgraded Pismo) and get the feeling this is the most likely from reading this - I sincerely hope this doesn't mean it's not going to be fixed as I just did the upgrade to Komplete and the Pismo at the same time - everything else in the bundle works fine.

    bummer

just to let you all know it's doing it on my pc laptop (xp home) as well

get the feeling 2.04 is flawed - the really interesting thing is i was using a patched copy with keygen for a while before i bought the legit version and it's this one giving me grief!

so i'm wondering if it's possible to go back to v 2.0??

well, the plist swap didn't change anything in 2.04. still crashes. however 2.0's behavior has changed. before it just crashed on startup, now it starts up and works fine. i can even mess around with the setup menu and it won't crash, unless of course i plug my midisport in, at which point it crashes just like 2.04.

this is getting tired real quick.

thanks for the help, any other thoughts?

This is quite the challenge. If I were you, I would start becoming a .plist hacker. Do you have any other NI programs you could compare the .plist files from and perhaps copy and paste working parts from?

The other thing would be to find a user with a working Absynth install and the same midi device as you and get them to send you their .plist file, after editing out those three private fields, of course. Maybe post a thread with Absynth and MidiSport in the title or something.

I'm sure you have checked this, but are you running the newest version of your midi driver? Also, do you have other midi drivers installed, perhaps from your DAW of choice? Logic installs emagic midi drivers, for instance. Check Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers.

You could also try testing Absynth with all drivers removed from that folder and see what happens. Get the audio and latency dialed in right, then add the driver back and try again.

If you have access to another machine, install and test Absynth there, without and with your interface. Run the registration tool before starting Abysnth, but don't register. Try the app and set prefs, then copy the .plist file to your machine and edit in the private data.

I don't know if I can think of anything else right now. If this weren't so frustrating to you, it might be a fun challenge.

Good luck and let me know what happens. If you want to chat real-time regarding this while you test, I am hyerstay at mac dot com on iChat. My email is jason at hyerstay dot com.

    More .plist files

Ok, I installed Absynth 2.0.2 on a G4 in my house, and then upgraded it to 2.0.4. There were no audio or midi devices present. Here are the .plist files from each instance. Maybe one of them will work for you. Just make sure to edit in the private data for those three fields.

You might also try editing AB MidiInPort 0 and/or AB MidiInPort 1 to each be 1 instead of 0 to turn on your first two midi ports.

Looking at my normal .plist file, I noticed that the two ones I just made have a value for Osc3, while my normal one has no value. Hmm.

    Let me know what happens.
