(I asked this on the Kompakt forum a while ago but got no replies)

Can you modulate sample start point with velocity? (and perhaps other sources)

    Thanks
    R.

I was wondering that myself...haven't found anything yet. Anyone else?

    Yes you can.
I do it all the time as sort of a sample cutting up trick to long pieces of audio files that I sample from record.
I use it to map a sample across a keyboard and play different parts of a that sample, thereby keeping the original groove of the sample.
You do it in the modulation part of Kontakt, it should give you the option, sample start.
This feature is one of the reasons that I swear by Kontakt as opposed to another sampler that was already OSX compatible. :(

Right, right. I've noticed that before, haven't gotten around to using it yet. But can you control exactly when and where you want the sample to start at?

    OK. Thanks!

    I guess it's similar to Kontakt. Like a fader +/- 0-100% ?

    yeah exactly.
It takes some playing around with because it's not an exact science.
Meaning the sample start values don't relate to the actual sample. They're generic modulation values and have no relation to the lenght of the actual sample. So sometimes you might want the sample to start at a certain point but you just can get the modulation settings to make it land on that point. Try it out if you figure out any tricks let me know.
    Peace

I browsed through the NI site and couldn't find such info. Funny, NI makes super applications and also a huge web site with user tips and goodies. Still, they do not touch the subject - product features.

Anyway, I'm thinking of ordering the 99$ Kontakt-->Kompakt offer thing. Your answer put me one step forward. 2 more things. I suppose, since the fader is +/-, you can also set the sample start point(a fixed and not modulated point) some amount into the audio?

The other one is: filterEnvelopeAmount - can it be controlled, using key velocity? (Yea, even 2003 some don't do this. Reason is one)

    Thanks

I'm not sure if I understand your first question, but I'll explain how I use the feature.

Lets say that I have a sample of a guitar being played for about 10 seconds. I want to isolate seconds 4-10 and skip 1-2. I also want to make it so that when I play my midi controller it start the sampler at different points depending on what keys (midi notes) I hit.

With the sample editor I will move the sample start position indicator to second 3 thus cutting samples 1-2.
So if I have the sample mapped correctly
(takes some playing around) then I can press C3 and it will play second 4, D3 second 5 and so on.

Now the good thing about this is that lets say I want to play around and I like seconds 4-6 but then I need 8-10 to follow accordingly. I can let 4-6 play and then bring in 8-10 by pressing the corresponding midi notes.

In Hip-hop its called chopping a sample up so that you can take and rearrange a sample to your liking.

Kontakt is the King of this. I used to use an MPC; NO MORE. Once Kontakt has a Beat slicing tool there will be no stopping this program from doing what Akai did for Hip-hop—that is making it a staple.
Add to that improved timestretching, effects Now lets just see that new version OSX please.

Oh yeah and the second question. Yes I think it can be done although I haven't gotten into doing ASDR modulation. It sounds cool and I need to try that out.

    Hope that helps.

I was able to find a manual yesterday. Not a word about this. You explained it all though.

Thanks a lot for the help.
