In K2.2.4, I need to run 16 mono outs and 2 stereo outs to 16 mono tracks and 2 stereo tracks in Sonar 6.2.1. I have tried to set this up using what is supposed to be default 32 channels in K2, but there are only 2 stereo outputs, and the unneccessary 5.1. If I delete the 5.1, I get the ' stop and restart all plugins(there are NONE) to ensure blahblahblah.
If default is supposed to be 32 channels, where are they?

When I add channels manually, they show up in the output section but not in the channel configuration. After putting kick on out 1, I put snare on out 2 and it comes out both, no matter what I select/deselect in channel config.

I have read and searched and found nothing that clearly says 'to do this, you must do this'. I don't want to run 20 instances on 20 tracks, either. Much preferred to have 1 midi track feeding channels, like in DFHS. Please help and thanks, Shep

I can have 16 stero tracks with K2 in Cubase 4, or 12 stereo tracks and 4 aux send. It depends on what you need. If you want to keep 4 aux send then you cannot have more than 12 stereo tracks or 24 mono tracks. If you dont want any aux send, then you can have 16 stereo or 32 mono.

In stand alone mode it depends on how many outputs your soundcard has, but now we're talking on how to do it in your host sequencer.

I show how to make 16 stereo tracks.

    1. Open Kontakt 2, not Kontakt2 16 out, neither Kontakt2 8 out.

    2. Push the "Outputs" button to see what outputs you have.

    3. Delete the 5.1 output

    4. Push "Add Channel" until you will have 16 out channels and 4 aux send. By default those will be stereo channels. The aux send cannot be deleted.

    5. Rename the new channels like ST1, ST2......ST16. This is an important step that will help you asign the outputs later.

    6. After you verified all its ok push "Make Default"(the red button)

    7. Restart Kontakt 2.

    8. Now asign the output for every channel. Push "Config" button at the base of the channels. You will see in the right side the number of audiochannels your output has. If 2 is stereo, if 1 is mono. Assign ST1 channel with Kt.ST 1(1) and Kt.ST 1(2) and so on until ST16 channel Kt.ST16(1) and Kt.ST16(2).

    9. Push again the button "Make Default"

    10. Restart Kontakt2.

    That's it

The secret is to push "Make default" and restart K2

Dont forget to enable K2 outputs in your Host. In Cubase 4 at the Vst instruments panel, right before the name of plugin, in other host you know better because I dont.

If you want some mono tracks rename them like M1,M2,...Mx,
push "config" button, set 1 audio channel in the right side, push "make default", restart Kontakt 2, assign the outputs coresponding ( For M1 assign Kt.2 M1 and so on)

If you have choosen to have 16 stereo tracks or 32 mono, or combination that use all of the 32 mono outputs that kontakt2 has, then you have not remaining separate outputs for aux send.

    I hope been useful

Thank you very much for the detailed walk through Catalin. You've been very helpful. Hope I may return the favor somewhere along the way. Peace, Shep

    Thanks very much indeed!

I think what went wrong over here is that I only did once the "make default" procedure in K2. I'll start from the top again and see if I can obtain complete control over my mono-stereo out setup...

    Bye!

    Hi again.

Ok. I've done exactly as mentioned in your post. Everything is fine within KONTAKT 2, but I still have trouble returning the 32 plugin outs to SONAR 5 Producer edition.

To summarize, I now configured K2 to have 6 stereo outs (plugin outs 1 thru 12) with 12 mono outs (plugin outputs 13 thru 24) and 4 stereo AUX FX outs (plugin outs 25 thru 32). Total of 32 outs.

Now, in Sonar , K2's mono outs # 14- 16- 18- 20- 22- 24 are not showing up! In short, K2 mono outs are still managed as stereo outs in Sonar!

K2's output # 13 and 14 are routed to Sonar input 13 "Left" and 13 "Right". Even if I configure sonar's track to be mono, k2's ouput 14 (for instance) is still not available. (see attached JPEG)

That means that, in Sonar 5, I cannot work with k2's EVEN mono outs in REALTIME to really be mixing multi-track. I have to bounce K2's mono audio outs as Stereo wave files and then do a "split stereo channels to mono wav files" .

I'll try to see if I cannot change something else in K2 ouputs to have SONAR see the EVEN mono outs.

I'll post my results... Can anybody help in the meantime?

    Cheers

    Update:

I've tried to improve the routing within K2 by going in instrument edit mode, messing around with the instument's amplifier CHANNEL ROUTING and Output parameters.

    No luck.

I set up exactly as described. I want from 1st output Mono for Kick, Snare, Snare Rolls,Toms 1-4, Hats. Stereo outs for Rides,Crashes, etc.
I put K2 in Sonar 6 opening up all tracks as mono(I need 22 total, and reconfig any as stereo). When I hit the kick, sound comes out of both kick and snare channels in Sonar, I have Kick out in K2 as mono and going only to Kick 1 out. Also, It sounds TOTALLY different than the default setup, WAAAY more output(5db clip as opposed to -6db default) and shows mono output on the meter in K2, but Sonar track is set as mono and input is set to K2 Primary out Left mono(note the lack of kick and snare named outs in Sonar) - but the meters show stereo on both kick and snare tracks...
Seems to me Kontakt could make a bunch of setup templates like Sonar does...Anyone care to tackle this one, please? Thanks alot, Shep

I guess I need to learn how to make jpegs look good here as well.
Here's a 2nd one to show Sonar's channel input choices...

    Update 2.

Now working in Pro Tools LE 7.3, I have successfully configured K2 with stereo and mono outputs back into PT. No problem.

I still have not figured out what's wrong when I try to rout K2 back into SONAR 5.

    Still working on it...

    Hi Jshep.

I think there is something that we're missing regarding SONAR. I just configured K2 with PT LE 7.3 without any problems.

So, I think that we have to find a solution with other SONAR users. I'll be posting about this on their forum.

This is a Sonar 6.2.1 Project file with Kontakt 2.2.4 with multiple stereo and mono outs for Steven Slate Drums 2.0.
Thanks to Jim Roseberry at StudioCat for his gracious help.
    To config-
Starting with the standard 2 stereo,5.1 and 4 aux:
    1) Delete 5.1, click ok.
    2) Add channel for how many outs you need, click ok each time til done.
    3) Click Configure, rename each out to what you want to call it, click ok, and ok each time it prompts til all are renamed. Press Make Default.Save project, close it, close sonar, reopen Sonar and project.
    4) In each K2 instrument select the output you want it to use in the header. Save project, close project, close and reopen Sonar and your project.
    4) Click each output config and left click each assignment, choosing the out you want by it's name, click ok - do all outs til done.
    5) Play each instrument and verify that they output to correct out.
    6) Press Make Default. Save project.
Hope this helps and that I remembered it all correctly, as I've done it exactly 1X now!- Peace, Shep

By the way, I started with a blank template in S6 and merely inserted K2 selecting 'all stereo outs' in the prompt. After I was done, I deleted the tracks I didn't need.

That's strange, jshep. The procedure you described looks a lot like the one i've used to configure K2 with PT. I'll try it again in sonar and have another go at it.

by the way, here SONAR 5 is creating only stereo return tracks from K2 by default. And, even after converting some stereo tracks to mono tracks in SONAR, only K2's ODD return channels are showing up. I cannot configure a return form K2 (for instance, output 18 of K2) on a mono track. I'll have to use a stereo return in Sonar and then output 18 from K2 will be connected to the right channel of that stereo track.

I'll gry it again from the top I guess.

    Thanks!

Actually while your in there be sure and check the "physical out" and make sure they're configured properly. Many times I've seen them setup differently than what I wanted them or they should be. Especially the Aux.:)

I also had to configure K2's outputs "many times" before I got it right in PT. (Pushed the "make default" button about 3 times, with a closing-opening of the project in between every time of course). But at the end it did work with PT... I'm still trying to get it right in Sonar... funny...

    Thanks!
