just a quick and straightforward question here - if i put two RIAA preamps before the inputs on audio 8 dj soundcard to get an additional stereo input from gramophone, will i be able to use 3 physical decks?

    Yes!

In traktor 3 however you would get a 'wrong in mode' message, but it worked, and the error was actually of no importance. Not shure how this has changed in Pro, but you should be able to use 4 timecode decks, vinyl or CD, no problem: just add external RIAA preamps as needed.

that's cool, thanks. anyone else tried this?
i can't understand why support for only 2 decks tbh.

Maybe to cut hardware costs? 4 built-in preamps would make the package another 100 bucks more expensive. Also, people would expect 4 multicores, and so on and on ;)

But, instead of wiring all that stuff together, you can use another way out: map a hotkey that switches deck A and C between internal and relative mode. The same for B and D. It essentially sets A to internal and C to relative, OR sets A to relative and C to internal. Because I use relative mode, I can switch my timecode record between two decks as much as I want, without hearing pitch fluctuations! Also, you need a modifiers (or 2 more hotkeys), but you can use that modifier to switch all your MIDI commands to the timecode controlled deck ;)

I do not know what you are planning to do with 4 decks, but if it is just for allways having a third deck around, this setup will work perfect: the currently playing deck doesn't need timecode anyway, so you can switch this deck to the third or fourth one. If you really need 4 decks at once, not just 3, this is off course no sollution.

But I like this sollution much better: only 2 extra cinch cables, while if you would have to drag 2 phono preamps around, you would need to make 2 Y cables too! I have done timecode with 4 decks too (2CDJ and 2 technics), but it really makes setup complicated...

thanks for the suggestion, but that seems too much of a hassle to me. i have no use of 2 decks mixing, 3 decks is optimal for me. i think i will probably go down the extra phono preamp route, but i would love to hear a NI representative on this, if it really works or not.

Works fine for me this way.
I just bought a wee Behringer PP400 phono preamp for about £16 and an extra timecode vinyl.
