Piano roll with step sequencer?

I have a quick question that I can't seem to figure out. I am a new user and have panned through the book, but can't quite sort this out. I am attempting to run the step sequencer on a piano roll. If I load up a sample out of absynth, I can easily swap back and forth between the step seq and piano roll view. But the pad defaults to a specific note. If I go to the piano roll I can play what I want....but if I want to step sequence different notes it won't let me change the note. Any suggestions?

The step sequencer is not really designed and set up with melody-making in mind unfortunately. You can do sort of monophonic step sequencing by changing the root note and changing the grid setting for note length before inputting the steps. Usable but perhaps not ideal.

Hmm that's kind of disappointing since a lot of my work is sequencer based. Be nice if you could choose a note in piano mode then sequence it. how do you change the root note?

Yes, that's what changing the root note does. Allows sequencing of just that note. Though you can't layer notes on the same step to make chords.

I think it's knob 2 in Step mode to change the root note but it's also whatever note is the root note (i.e., played by pad 1) in keyboard mode, so can be changed there too.

I think I meant more ability to select via the piano roll...change over to the sequencer and add in. Rather than loading in 16 specific sounds one at a time. Thanks for the help :)

I'm not talking about using sixteen Sounds, just one. And step sequencing it at different pitches.
