I'm not sure how you can state the mk2's current inability to work with iOS7 as a reason NOT to buy it over the mk1. It will eventually work with the newer iPads. However, the S4 mk1 never will.

Also, any midi controller can technically work with Traktor. I think makar1 is referring to controllers that natively support NI's proprietary NHL protocol. Currently, only NI's own controllers are being sold with this functionality.

I'm mainly referring to any controller that comes bundled with Traktor LE, and has its mapping built into Traktor - i.e. the old "Traktor Ready" certification. There haven't been any of those for a while.

In my opinion it doesnt seem to have the same sound quality. Plus if you are gigging and laptop dies so does the controller. Really just probably my own personal paranoia more then anything I suppose.

Like I said I personally would loveeeee to get a s4 mk2 or even a s2 mk2 BUT there are so many isssues with the whole freeze issue that has been going on for months. My confidence in those just isn't very high. It doesn't get any better then how tightly traktor integration is with there own controllers.

Power source (USB vs mains) does not affect the quality of the sound. You often get a stronger signal from a mains powered controller, but you'll be plugging into some mixer anyway.

I read the whole thread and basically no one answer the original question. It's more of a debate if a traktor user should use pioneer products and reverse.
I am a traktor user for the time that audio 8 first came up. I gave 500+ to buy the audio card + the traktor pro programm. Then I gave an extra 80 for Traktor pro 2.
After all these years I sold my audio 8 to buy an S2 MKI. And that was my mistake!
When I went to test it, I was surprised!
The output level of headphones is so low that it wouldn't be possible to use the controller even in my house. That low. Then decided to wait for S2 MKII. Hopefully I thought, this will be fixed. But again the same. Output level(volume) for headphone is better but onthe low side again. How could I use this controller to the club I work? No way. And the S4 that is better on this feature is 300€ more and I dont need the extras it has.

So 2 djs proposed me the SR. They both had S2 and S2 MKII before and both gave it for the headphones reason. I am going to test the SR and see(hear) it for myself.

So if there is a mapping for SR to work with traktor. Why shouldn't I support pioneer and support NI? I cannot understand this hostility. Obviously NI dont allow 3rd party companies just to support its products but why should I support or not the one side or the other. That is stupid just to think about it. It all has to do with needs and not what we should and what we shouldn't. It is ridiculous

So I ask again the original question. DDJ-SR or S2 MKII? pros and cons for each side.

Well you can look at native instruments posts on the many, many freezing issues with both the s4 mk2 and s2 mk2. I had purchased one hoping for a fix, yes i tried it on a mac and windows pc. And still had constant freezing issues that native instruments finally acknowledged after months. From what i am reading ( I had no choice but to return my s4) there are still constant freezing issues on both s4, and s2 mk2 models. With this being said I would 100% recommend the pioneer ddj sr over the s2 mk2. The official traktor mapping on pioneers site works fine with the sr. And you do not have to worry about random freezing issues or any of the other issues related to the s2 mk2.

Here is one of the many posts where people complain about the freezing related to the s2 mk2. I would definitely at least research this before making a decision. Good luck...

It's not hostility and it may not be that NI won't allow support.
It's more than likely that things have been made more lucrative to support Serato, just look at the new flood of controllers for Serato DJ as well as not wanting to pay develope for NI products.
When Serato released Serato DJ they gave free updates to a lot of third party controllers instead of making them have to purchase it.
That was a pretty aggressive move to gain market share.

Once Pioneer stopped releasing "T" versions of their controllers they also became very aggressive with the support of Serato, so why go that route?
They could go back to releasing both "S" and "T" versions or a hybrid that does both.

Makes no sense to support a vendor who doesn't support you.

great topic here. Part of my decision to go with Traktor several years ago was that they made their own hardware.

My thought was that NI would have a better quality hardware and be able to produce and integrate new features much faster than Serato/hardware vendor combo. I also felt that the NI hardware/software would be far more stable what a lot less issues since its all coming from the same company.

Today i feel i was wrong and the opposite has happened with NI & traktor. Pio & Serato seem to have a strong open partner ship. NI seems to struggle with internal communication as well as communication with its customer base.

Perhaps Traktors biggest down fall is not working with other vendors like Serato is doing pio and others.

You're partly right, but I think it is more of a case that Ni is not allowing the other manufacturers to make gear for traktor, so naturally they make it for serato where the door was once closed. They say when one door closes many more are open. In this case it seems ni closed the door on manufacturers and Serato has their door wide open and has many looking in.
