    Hi N.I

Is it possible to update the level meters on the S4. As they are very small and only two colours is very difficult to monitor the levels in the same way you can on a dj mixer. Even if i get the cued up track to just hitting the red, the difference can be really noticable and we really need more control. Ive tried this on big 3000 people festival stages & small underground clubs and the monitoring is really cumbersome in both so would love there to be a solution to this if its possible.

My suggestions are - on the S4 to update the unit with firmware to add a different colour e.g blue, amber, red so we can monitor more effectively.

On the Traktor software a sensitivity slider for the faders in the prefs so that the cut in of the volume can be changed (e.g i find it really sharp just at the top which adds to this particular issue as the fader is only really noticeable on the speakers / in the mix over halfway, which leaves even less room to work with - but obviously there are different uses & prefs)

Also on the traktor software a big level meter for the channels & master. This could be activated on the S4 by shift & cue/headphone button for example and would pop out a really large and responsive level meter which could be used to fine tune the mix in the same way you can on a normal dj mixer.

If you could fix this, it would really help performing both the basic & the more complex stuff possible with the s4 a lot easier.

    Kind regards
    Marc

    Marc,

Your posts are music to my ears ;)

For me, the poor level meters and the strange linefader curve (it feels as if its logarithmic, not linear) are the two main shortcomings of the S4. I play house and prefer smooth, long transitions. To that end, I only use the linefaders, the crossfader is disabled. But it's really hard to control levels accurately with the linefaders given their curve is so steep. so a big +1 from me.

Not sure if this would be of any help.
search for the midi touch/display called Vumeter

I remeber seeing this thing but not sure if it would be of use.

    other than that
    +1 on all suggestions.

Nice one zephry - Just had a look and not sure if you could route the 4 outputs to 4 different channels on that? Could be potentioal workaround if possible though. Thanks for headsup

    Autogain?

A powerful computer and software combination automatically calculates the gain with very accurate results. There is no practicality for this feature on current S4.

Maybe in the future NI may release a controller with higher resolution level meters, but again, what good is this if auto gain is working to make all audio +0.0dB ?

i would prefer if you kept that bug out of this thread. it has nothing to do with the feature request. (fyi, as a workaround, run "restore autogain" on the tracks for which traktor initially determines a replaygain of +0.0dB.) /off-topic

Traktor 2.5 has much better level meters, a lot more resolution that I now find useful ! Cheers NI !

Apologies for not replying sooner to this post - Just dloading the 2.5 update now so looking forward to seeing the improvements.

Just wanted to add that i'd echo malzfreund's earlier post and that for me the autogains can often fall short for whatever reason, and ive often found the track being mixed in can be too quiet and need a gain boost to balance it which in turns raises it above the 0.0 autogain setting. Also just mixing to one set volume really limits the dynamic range you can use like on a standard or in house mixer where you're riding the faders so to speak.

Using eyes with a clear volume meters would help to address the problem of the s4s logarythmic style volume faders and behave more like a normal dj mixer so very pleased to hear its been looked at in the update.

Anyway just wanted to add my belated feedback to that point while traktors backing up before upgrade. Getting my s4 back from servicing tomorrow and really looking to checking this new update. Very nice to know n.i are listening for such fundamental issues. Best. Marc
