Re: Please post here! Don't make Kore a dongle...

I think that's a lot to do with it. If KORE was a self contained stand alone unit ... something like Receptor, it would be a different story we would think of it as a piece of hardware.

Even if you could buy KORE with something like a MacMini, rackmount it and operate it entirely with the KORE controller (without a display and keyboard) it could seem like a standalone solution.

Right now since I have KORE tying up $5000 (when you look at the cost of a G5, Ram, Hard Drives) (hardware and software that can also work without KORE ) there's a fine line in what the level of overlap, redundency, and dependency between the devices is.

When you have the freedom to use as you choose, the price of KORE seems reasonable. But when it begins to tie you down, tie up your machines and limit the flexibility of all your other gear it gets to the point of not being worth it...

Well, it was a good demo tonight, and KORE really does look very good. But as it turns out, the demo was presented by the music shop, not by NI.

The guy who presented confirmed that it doesn't work without the hardware and agreed that it was a pretty bad idea, but didn't have any more information beyond that.

He did seem to think that NI wants the .ksd sound format to become widely adopted by other music companies. I don't know if his hunch is correct or not.

But certainly, if other hosts adopt the format, then the issue of KORE tying software to hardware is obviously less of an issue.

Oh well - I was hoping to buy a KORE when it came out but now I guess I'm gonna have to wait and see like everyone else...

Making it a dongle will betray allot of loyal customers who come to Native Instruments as a safe haven of quality products by a company that doesn't want to punish us.

Please don't start punishing us now.

It would be great if the users could load their songs without kore being connected.

I could live with a limitation that sounds can't be changed when kore isn't connected.

My studio-partner has the same software setup like me but no kore controller - so it would be great when he could load my projects.

nah, as ewistrand said earlier, this desicion came late, after all the beta testers were using it.

i know jack sh*t about kore, mainly because i cant afford another piiece of gear and i mostly work in reaktor standalone, but, i must say that if i were to buy it this would be somewhat annoying to me as well. if the controller did something integral to the whole thing, like had DSP algos that powered the software, of provided DSP effects, i could understand this. but not as a midi copntroller.

im guessing this thing isnt an audio interface as well, right? cuz if yes, i could find use for it then as i go out with my laptop, as my built-in soundcard is busted, but if it is just a controller, id much rather bring around something like my MPD, where i can actaully play it like as instrument (this is just me, of course, alot of folks dont mind using the laptop keyboard stricktly in ableton or reaktor).

Agreed - please don't use the hardware as a dongle. The stuff on pages 195-197 of the manual, dont make too much sense with the system configured as it is now.

Add me to the list. I own most of the NI products and was about to plunk down my money for KORE system so I could port setups from my studio machine to my live laptop setup and was horrified to see that KORE acts like a dongle and is required to be in place to run KORE software.

Imagine 5 years from now when you can't get a replacement for a lost/stolen/broken KORE and your projects and all their plugins and settings are locked into a proprietary format. Manufacturers *DO* go out of business. Product lines *DO* get dropped.

Seemed like a great concept, but you just lost yet another customer on this one, NI.

what i don't understand is that NI are loosing loads of money because of this issue, yet we get no comments on this thread or even from emails.

    i just don't get it.

I don't understand this either! Maybe they just decided to ignore this subject cause they are not willing to admit it was bad decision to make KORE a dongle for the Kore-Software.

An half-way-solution could be to make the Kore-Plugin for VST-Hosts run without the controller, to enable Music-Producers to open their song`s in their sequencers even without the controller. The Standalone-KORE -Host with Presets and Live functionality could remain depending on the connected contoller. This is not what I think is ideal, but maybe would be accaptable for the users as well as for NI....

This is a very good point, I am beginning to get a bit worried about this and the cpu issue I am getting; maybe it is time for me to return my Kore/Komplete 3 for a refund.

I am waiting to see if NI tech Support get back to me about my high CPU, if they don't this week then its all going back, thats more than £1000 sale lost!

    Cheers

Good point, when Kore becomes the next Dynamo, it will be interesting which product you will be forced to buy to make all of your legacy projects continue to work.

This idea is about as smart as forcing me to use my Mackie control surface with Sonar.

Can you imagine being on an airplane, pulling out your laptop on your seat tray, setting up, and then saying to the person beside you "Do you mind if I use your seat tray? I need some extra room to set up my control surfaces."

i never believed that NI will make such a nightmare of product!!!!!

everytime I load Kore, re escan all the database!!!
so what is the advantage of having Kore ...if the time u save having that weak organizer now u wast waiting for the sacanning of the VST!!!!

also clicks exist all the time!

    Never find the kontak samples!!!

I really feel sorry for the developers at NI.....maybe they had a great idea....but I see the corporate guys rushed them to realease the product without any consistency ...and also i think NI was the most cutting edge company...now is going to the caverns era!!! why we need to have the KOre interface to load the kore sounds!!! thats ridiculous!!!

the world is moving to smaller computers, smaller devices and now we have to carry the kore controller on an airplae even if we dont use it at all!!!

    Thats going backwards!!

    Hi,

You can tell it not to rescan on startup, look in the options screen.

This will at least remove one anoyance!

Hey, I'm really happy that people are in agreement about this. NI have changed their minds about dongles before, so it is possible that they do so this time too.
I really hope so. I'm not liking the way that the industry is going with that, and I will continue to support only products that do not use dongles.

I'm tired of feeling like I'm the bad guy. I've paid thousands of dollars for software, and I would like it to work when I just carry a laptop around with nothing else.

I bought KORE without realizing that it is a dongle. I am quite disappointed by the prospect that if I use the KORE plugin in a track, I will have to have the KORE controller attached in order to play back or modify the track later.

This, along with the CPU overhead of having the KORE controller plugged in, will definitely limit my use of KORE, possibly to just creating patches.

If requiring KORE to be plugged in is considered a licensing feature, maybe it would be worthwhile making the license behaviour configurable when registering the software? If I could choose between having a floating KORE license attached to the KORE controller, and having two KORE licenses that don't require a controller to run, I would definitely choose the latter.

At first sight I found it very tempting as a owner of Komplete 3, Komplete Care 2006 and Komplete Sound 2 to get Akoustic Piano for free if I buy Kore and register it before 30.06.2006. Especially taking into consideration that I haven’t got anything remarkable for Komplete Care 2006 until today! The concept to get some sort of order by classifying sounds and make it available through a hardware controller could be helpful if it works as advertised.

Reading this forum I’m really shocked about the amount and quality of the complains of the NI users which have already ordered this sucker. The reasons which are holding me up from taking my credit card out of my wallet are in general the same reasons like the others have pointed out:

    1. Built quality seems to be poor like some unprofessional Chinese production with lack of QC system. These issues remind me of some other famous equipment manufacturer which had similar problems with a couple of his devices in the past.

    2. Software seems to be buggy, especially the most important VST implementation and the standalone software as well.

    3. The hardware controller works like a hardware dongle.

Sorry Sirs at NI, but I will not pay under no circumstances 499;00 EUR for this incompetent piece of hard- and software even if I get one other piece of buggy software for free.

The only way to keep me as a buying customer is to improve the built quality of the hardware controller to the expected industry standards, remove the bugginess of the software and most important:

Remove the unnecessary dongle feature from the hardware controller – your software is already copy protected!!!

Implementing this dongle feature is a one-sided change in the contract conditions which you already have with your Komplete 3 and Komplete Care 2006 clients, which they only can take if they buy the Kore deal. This is no good business practise at all!!! Everybody who is interested in fair customer treatment should boycott campaigns like this.

If NI is interested in keeping their loyal customers they should immediately reconsider what they have done here, extend the grace period from 30.06.2006 to 31.10.2006 until all the major hardware and software issues mentioned above are remedied and the dongle feature is removed. I don’t think they will be able to sell the Kore product as advertised until 30.06.2006 if I read through all of these user reports.

After the Komplete 3 and Komplete Care 2006 complain campaign followed by the continuous Kontakt missing update complain this is the third major issue where customers have serious complains about product quality and product policy.

NI I would like to recommend to your managing board that these people involved there should wake up in a hurry and recognise what they have actually done. Your standing and reputation within the music industry is getting more and more damaged through your own selfish business practices. The risk of having a lot of customers feed up and stop buying NI products could be actually bigger than losing money through software piracy.

NI hurry up you are late!
