I bought a Mac laptop last year (1.66 GHz G4, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM). I'm a full time musician and use GuitarRig 2 for my live sound (I'm an acoustic guitar player who does a lot of looping). I've loved the versatility but latency has bugged me some (I'm around 10-11ms). Do the new Intel based Macs significantly increase performance? Should I invest in a laptop one or wait a little longer. Thanks for your help.

Hi. I'm surprised that your latency is 10-11ms, because I have mine set at 9ms on an iBook that is significantly less powerful (see specs in sig below) than your machine. Are you using the RK2, or a different audio interface?

I plan on upgrading to a MacBook (2GHz, 2GB RAM) as soon as possible for even better performance. A couple of people on these forums have already mentioned good results with MacBook + GR2.

I have switched from G4 PB 1.25 1GB to MacBook 2GHz 1GB, and I am not so impressed anymore... The MacBook can handle more plugins, but when I only run GR2.2 with the RK2 I feel I must still stay at 10 ms, anyway, to be safe from crackles. High-res is off. Maybe the new Core 2 Duo does better...

Try using a firewire interface instead of going through the rig controller. You can still use the controller to control, but the audio is much sweeter and the system is taxed far less, you can crank down the latency more, as well.

Well, autumn 2004. When I first bought GR, it was a big setback for my until then, excellent performing PB 1,25GHz. But what a great sound from GR :)
Tried a firewire interface from m-audio. But nothing could beat the pci-based built-in audiocard, or the PCMCIA (also pci based)solution combined with RME Multiface. Actually the built in audiocard was the one that was most effective when it came to latency and heating. I could go 2-3ms lower than the firewire interface. But as I have posted in another thread. The built in audiocard in MacBook can not be used with GR2.2, yet... Thread: "GR2.2 UB Bug? Intel MacBook, built-in audio"

    Hi,
I Have a Macbook (2GB) and planning to use it live with Guitar Rig 2, but I'm also very concerned about latency..
Should I try maybe to use my Edirol FA-66 firewire soundcard together with Rig Control?
What's the best way to set that up?
    Many thanks!
