Prelisten/Output Monitoring ?

    Hi guys,

I am confused about what it means to prelisten to a track with the headphone cue.

I am using Traktor Pro with Internal Mixing with a Traktor Audio 2 interface. I have my Output Master routed to 1:Channel A Left and 2:Channel A Right, and I have my Output Monitor routed to 3:Channel B Left and 4:Channel B Right.

    What I want to do:
While a track is playing/routed to the Output Master (speakers) on Deck A, I want to be able to prelisten to a separate track on Deck B (headphone cue) and to hear ONLY the track playing on Deck B in my headphones. I don't want to hear the track from Deck A in my headphones at all.

    What is actually happening:
When a track is playing/routed to the Output Master (speakers) on Deck A and I prelisten to a separate track on Deck B (headphone cue), I hear both the track from Deck A and the track from Deck B in my headphones.

Channel B in my Traktor Audio 2 interface is set up for "Output" monitoring, so perhaps everything is working as it should in Traktor Pro.

However, when I used to DJ with turntables, CDJ's, and an external mixer, I could choose which channels to send to my headphones. If I wanted to listen to only a single channel/deck in my headphones while another channel/deck was playing simultaneously through the speakers, I could do that with no problem.

    My questions:

    1) Is Traktor Pro supposed to route all output to the output monitoring channels as is happening with my setup currently (including both master output and output cued only to the headphones), or is this some kind of technical glitch?

    2) Is it possible to set up Traktor Pro so that I hear only the tracks cued for my headphones (with the headphone cues) in my Output Monitor channels B Left and B Right? Again, when I prelisten to a track with the headphone cue, I would like to hear only the track I have cued to the headphones with no other tracks from the master output being sent to the headphones at all.

Thanks in advance for any help with these questions.

I found this UI component for Traktor Pro on a beatgrid tutorial by DJ Endo from dubspot.

This UI component looks like it would allow me to control both the "mix" and the "volume" of my headphone channels from within it. That's what it looks like anyway... If that's what it does, then I could take the master output out of my headphone mix with it. That's just what I'm looking for.

But I have no idea how to get to this UI component in Traktor Pro.

If this is relevant to my problem, could anyone please help me to figure out how to pull up this UI component in Traktor Pro. (I'm using Traktor Pro 2.1.2)

Again, thanks in advance for any help with my question.

Okey Dokey... I figured out how to fix my problem myself.

I had 4 decks (A, B, C, and D) enabled in my Deck Layout Preferences. With 4 decks enabled my MIX and VOL knobs for the headphones were not visible. I had to disable decks C and D (uncheck "Enable C & D") in the Deck Layout prefs, and then the MIX and VOL knobs showed up beneath my B deck. (This is where these knobs reside in Traktor 2.1.2. They are the same knobs as the ones in the attached jpeg I uploaded in my previous reply. That was an older version of Traktor in the attached jpeg.) The MIX knob does control the mix between the master signal and the signal cued for the headphones. It was just what I needed to fix my problem. (BTW, this VOL knob controls the volume for the headphones.)

The MIX and VOL knobs are mentioned at the end of section 6.8.6 "BeatGrid Panel (GRID)" of the Traktor 2 Manual, p. 105. However, the manual doesn't mention that this part of the user interface is hidden if you have 4 decks enabled in the Deck Layout preferences. (Maybe this doesn't happen on all computers/monitors... I dunno.)

Actually, I just checked it out, and if you have decks C & D as Sample Decks in your Deck Layout, then the MIX and VOL knobs for the headphones are still visible even with all 4 decks enabled in the layout. The knobs are also visible with different combinations of sizes of 4 track decks. They go away if you take up too much space with your 4 track decks. (You can play around with the sizes of 4 track decks to see what I mean. Double-clicking on the deck frames will toggle through different layouts, some of which expose the MIX and VOL knobs for the headphones, etc.)

I know I'm answering my own question, but I figured I'd tell folks how I fixed my problem in case someone else stumbles across the same one in the future.

    take it easy.

Well done on figuring that out for yourself. And yes posting your results could be helpful to someone else having the same issue.

    Glad you got it working.
