I have somewhere in the region of 500 sample libraries imported and meticulously tagged in Maschine software. The upcoming update includes some must-have features and I can't wait for release but I am feeling a little anxious about the prospect of screwing up my sample library.
I am hoping someone will be kind enough to clear up a few questions I have.

    1. Will the update be a new install?
    2. Will new updates to expansion packs be required?
    3. Is the tag information of samples that I have imported stored within the sample files themselves or as a database somewhere within NI folders that I can back up?
    4. If I were to uninstall Maschine now, what would be the quickest way to re-install and have all of my samples back in as they are now, all tagged?

I have never performed an update to Maschine software before so please forgive me if these questions appear ignorant. I really would like to know the best steps to take right now for backing my library up.
    Thank You.

Backup your database, but the update shouldn't change anything. It's not a major update,it's rather a point . update.. Regardless always back up your database.

Yes samples are tagged. beyond this, more importantly, always have a back up of your data and samples..

What and where are the "database" files that I should back up?

Google it, I can't tell you the answer because I'm not sure if your on mac or pc. They are in different places obviously dependent on your OS.
Both will be in your users folder, but if on mac, there's a trick to bring up your Users folder, which in itself is worth the read. Alike in windows, the User folder may be hidden, so please do yourself the favor and google it. Try something like Maschine 2 database mac or pc user folder location, this should help you answer your questions. Googles a beast..

Thank You. I appreciate the advice. I back up all of my internal drives to externals on a regular basis so whatever the files are, they are definitely backed up. I was curious to find out specifically which files apply to my Maschine database and as you suggested, the answer was easily found on Google. I wouldn't normally ask a question without Google searching first but since we were here..

Actually NI is restructuring the whole tagging structure and old libraries wont load into 2.2.. you will have to re-tag everything from scratch..

nah.. j/k, its what happens when anyone says they have 500 libraries...:D

Tags are not in some db or plist file, they are directly written on audio files as metadata.
So there is no need to worry to lose them. unless the update overwrites your own audiofiles!

Well that's good news. I am wondering now if the database stores information about which sample folders you have imported. Although I wouldn't have to tag the files again, it would still be quite the pain to manually import each any every folder again.

I started tagging my kits and such, but then I saw that there is a file tree section.. so, all I had to do was open the folders which were already organized by company and genre.. etc. From there, drag and drop midi, samples.. whatever.

It's cool to be able to tag it all, but with over 80 GB of samples, packs, midi, and loops.. It's so much easier to just browse Maschines file tree.

My hats off to you fellas who have the time and patients to tag it all.

I don't think that will happen either, but just in case you can back up /Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Maschine 2 and
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Maschine 2

File tree just doesn't cut it when you have thousands of kick samples in different sample pack folders across your hdd. That is a lot of folder digging to audition files. The time taken to tag files is absolutely priceless for the improvement to workflow.

I have a lot of samples, File tree works fine for me. . It definitely cuts it.

I have already organized all of my samples by genre, key, type, and, file type.

The File Tree mode auditions samples when the sample is selected, it's not different than auditioning files in the TAG Browser.

I didn't realize that you had gone to the extent of organizing your samples by type and key etc. So if you have all of your kick drums in one folder on your hdd then yes that would be just as effective as tagging. However, I can't help thinking that this is surely equally as time consuming as tagging or perhaps even more so. Maybe I'm missing something here but it seems you could have just as easily tagged the files while retaining their original file structure. I'm not trashing your system, just trying to understand it.

Surely it just comes down to whether you want to and care about auditioning and finding samples from your Maschine controller. If you do want that, tag, tag, tag away. If not, I'm wondering why you're even using Maschine. :p

You're wondering why I'm even using maschine if I don't want to audition and find my personal samples from my hardware controller?

    Thank you for wondering!

I won't bother or bore you with the details of why I've chosen to learn and use maschine. (especially because this thread is not the proper location for that discussion)

But I can assure you, if you believe that your craving to audition and find samples via the maschine hardware elevates you personally in correlation to those of us who'd prefer a different workflow. .. you're thinking foolishly.

There's more to Maschine than that.

To Sw1fty, this link will direct you to the Maschine data base file. The .db file (I think it is, should hold your tags and settings) you can copy it and paste it in a separate folder to have on back up. I'm not sure what the update will bring. I'd wait 24-48 hours after the update is released, and keep an eye on the forums.

New forum posts will pop up with any issues or post update conundrums. If you want to re post this type of thread, I'd recommend re-writing it and posting after the update is released to see if any users are experiencing those issues.

If users assure you that their TAGS and SETTINGS are in tact, post update... then.. go ahead and update with your .db backed up.

If they're experiencing issues, you'll be making an educated decision on how you'd like to proceed.
