I've sent a support query about this, but in case that takes ages I'll just post here...
a quick search yielded no results, so apologies in advance if this has been discussed before.

When I originally installed Komplete 7, I elected to install the library on a dedicated external hard drive. Fine, everything works as expected. However I noticed after installing just how many Native Instruments folders were dotted around.

    Three that I know of.
1: the library on my external hard-drive
    2: in the applications folder
    3: in the documents folder

Jesus... I guess there's some good reason for that but I don't know it. Two - MAYBE - but three ? seriously, three ?

Anyway, everytime I use service centre to check for updates, I download them successfully. and they appear to install right as they correctly display 'upgrade' during the installation. I am not presented with an opportunity to choose where these updates are installed.

Half the time I don't even know for sure if the content has been updated properly, like kontakt patches, where's the god-damn version number in the patch to verify ?
I have reason to suspect it's not working right, as the last reaktor patch I updated - Prism - can not be found. It was supposed to update Prism to v 1.10.... but my Prism is still on v 1.01

So where did it go ? ... the installation seemed to work. It correctly knew it was upgrading my prism. Except apparently it didn't.

When I open reaktor, and open Prism via the 'Player' tab...it's still the old version. And I can't find it elsewhere.

    jesus, what a **** system.

I go to great lengths to make sure my computer is sensibly organized with no clutter, and yet systems like this somehow manage to arse the whole situation.

so....does anyone know where the updates actually go to when your library is installed on an external HD ? Btw, I installed it on the external drive properly...during the installation process. I didn't just cut&paste, if anyone's thinking that.

Agree 100%. You haven't found every directory they actually make, by the way ;)

At least on OS X there is an additional plugins folder, with ensembles and the like, plus another set of files added to the systemwide audio unit folders (AUs, VSTs and other formats go here for all DAWs to automatically see them). And more presets and Kontakt instruments go in /users/Shared! With the package being licensed to only one user it would make more sense to keep all but AUs inside one Application Support directory.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Native Instruments\Reaktor Prism

Is the registry key on my system (XP 32-bit) and ContentDir is the name of the entry where Prism is installed.

On the Mac it is in a plist.

It is very complicated to locate all the various system and user setting for all the tools in Komplete. Some are user definable, some are 'hard coded' and they vary with architecture and OS.

I keep a complex set of file pointers and cross-links so I can navigate from here to there and it has taken me quite some time to find them all.

There are reasons for keeping some things separated by user libraries and projects and system libraries and projects, but there are more than that number of types of locations: database areas, common shared areas for things like Kore, etc.

I keep a Windows Toolbar which I call NI that holds most of these links:

You have great organizational skills Jim. Thanks again. This is a useful picture for attempting to create something similar on my system.

    cant register komplete elements

well i got sent a link to download and a serial, but the serial doesnt work. it doesnt even have elements listed after i installed it, just players, and the activation email says its for elements but i guess i shouldnt have assumed that it would work with players but the service center doesnt even have elements listed. so either i got a bad key or something is up with service center.
