I bought this in the recent Black Friday sale for 20 bucks but CW have extended the sale. ;)

Ridiculously low cpu hit for the sound quality but what i like about it is the processing you have for each element, dual filters and dsp effects plus 3 band eq and insert fx per part so great for layering and shaping sounds without having to use up the 3 maschine slots. Also loads sfz so you can use drum kits etc.

It is a bit mousecentric with editing and browsing but it's a great little workhorse synth, there are a couple of nice free soundbanks from CW and patch arena and then there are some really nice soundsets like the Galbanum stuff. But yeah the cpu hit is so low if your running low system spec or an older machine. Check it out if you missed it. :)

It looks quite cool (especially at that price). I couldn't really see in the product page, does it have user assignable macro controls?

No problem! Yeah there are some nice sales around now. Rapture is a nice fit for maschine imo. I already own z3ta but i prefer Rapture all round. Maybe not one for the hip hop heads but there are some ok keys and organs but if you own komplete probably already covered in that dept.

Rapture at this price is a bargain. I snapped it up during the Black Friday weekend. Some of the pad sounds are fantastic to my ears and it is quite handy for creating stranger kind of atmospheric sort of sounds.

Have only scratched the surface in "mucking about" with it but really enjoyed using it so far.

Rapture is one of my all-time favorites. can't believe it is this cheap. once you register it at Cakewalk, you get a lot of expansion pack sounds. so many sounds!

No modulation is a bit limited, it does have an assignable xy pad and you can map ccs to things like the envelope and step generator depth parameters.

Yeah it's nice for pads, mainly what i bought it for cause you can stack sounds and barely touch the cpu. Check out the Glabanum demos. And yeah, so many sounds it's worth it just for them imo.

What didn't you like? If it's the factory sounds there are some stonking patches in the expansions, it's worth it for the soundbanks then you've go a pretty deep synth on top. But generally it'm more geared towards pop and electronic unless you create your own sfz. What about Dimension Pro/LE?

certain synths although technically capable and with extensive sound libraries and detailed sound design

but the tonal quality of the oscillators or wave forms has a flat/ flat /dead/ cold somewhat metallic sterile sound to my ear.

admittedly it was a long time a go since i demoed it and some days my ear is off but that is not the type of sonic character i look for in my synths.

but it depends what kind of music u make

for me good synth sounds need to a a vibrant lively warmer tone with more body.

i realise that with sound design u can achieve different sounds with any synth but i like to find synths that already have the types of textures and presets that i like then work from there.

as opposed to finding some horrible sounds and working to tweak that into something i like.

I bought it during the sale and it's very good. Not used used it a huge amount, but from what I have it's great synth.

Installer does not work on Mountain Lion (or Lion i think) so that was a royal pain in the @ss. Got it working eventually with the help of Snow Leopard install. Just a warning for men with Mac's ;)

Yeah that was my issue with it, some of the patches like the sequences sounded cold and metallic but i think that's due to the wavetables and the filters aren't exactly warm. It's a digital sounding synth in general but then there are some really lush analog style pads and motifs. I'm gonna try running it through maschines saturation and tape to see how it sounds. Check out the Galbanum piscis sounds anyway, i think they show better what it's capable of without actually buying it. :)
