Great! Another update! That means I get to go to the studio without internet (like many professional studios), unhook my Mac Pro tower from all my studio gear, load it into my truck along with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, drive it back to my house, unpack it from the truck and set it all up, install the update, and then bring it back to the studio! Thanks NI!

for the love of god man buy yourself a $10 memory stick.

it's not like NI is going to stop developing software just so you don't have to update it!

That's the point dude-the new updater does not let you save the update to take to an offline computer.

If you don't believe me, log into your user account where you used to be able to download all your installers and see what you find there now.

Sucks, but it does highlight a couple of interesting topics:

    On one hand:
Companies like NI are always going to look at their main user base, which I suspect (could be wrong) in the main is not professional musicians but enthusiastic amateurs, so a pro studio with no internet access is a tiny minority of users. They do have to be careful not to alienate the pros though because those enthusiastic amateurs do want 'pro' kit, and if the pros avoid their stuff, eventually NI will lose market share.

    On the other hand:
Sometimes there comes a time when you have to bite the bullet and accept that the times they are a changin'. Refusing to modernise a business to incorporate technology that has become the norm is rarely a good long term strategy. If there are risks and costs associated with the changes, then those risks have to be managed. There is always a point where the risk and cost of not modernising becomes greater.

It would be interesting to hear comments from folk who work in pro studios that do have internet access and use it to keep their software updated. What problems they have encountered, the kind of security they have in place, what their process is when updates need to be applied etc.

    ColB,
Thanks for the thoughtful response-one important point that I think you are missing is that at least for me it's not a question of biting the bullet and modernizing. The studio used to have internet. And you know what the studio was like with internet? It was like every other place with internet-a bunch of people sitting on their cell phones looking at facebook and not making music. Ever since I got rid of the internet I am 1000% times more productive and focused. If I urgently need internet beyond some small task that I can handle with my iPhone, then I set up a personal hotspot on my iphone to use the browser on the computer for a few minutes as I download a manual or something....

The solution to me seems simple-NI still have the "My Products and Serials" part of the users account area. They should just continue to keep those files as downloadable for offline computers. I use many different softwares from many different companies. After recently upgrading our studio computer when I saw this issue and had to bring the computer home, NI was the only business that did not have offline installers.

It should be possible to limit internet access so that folk can't abuse it. Set up a firewall allowing access for updates and other legitimate pro studio related stuff... Maybe automate general access at specific times...

The primary person I am wanting to limit is myself. This is primarily my studio. Others are there some times. I am there all the time. If I have internet, I spend my time on forums and facebook instead of making music. Getting rid of internet at the studio was the best decision I made in getting my music done. I recommend it to anyone that feels like they spend too much time on the internet instead of making music. What frustrates me isn't so much when a business makes future products unavailable....it is when they retroactively make what used to be able to be downloaded so that now you can't-like Reaktor 6, K10 Ultimate upgrade, and all my Machine expansion packs.

for me, when i am done doing a reaktor update, there is an installer .zip in my downloads folder (win 10).

i am also able to download it manually thru the support section of this website.

ymmv. others have told me that they don't have these options.
