Just a gee-whiz question... how does the S4 controller being connected via USB during installation interfere with the installation process?

probably because the drivers need to be installed before the device is connected..quite common.. dont worry about it.

If you connect it before the drivers are installed the OS tried to map it with generic drivers which of course don't work. When you do the real driver install the correct drivers are not attached to the device because your OS thinks it already has drivers (the wrong ones) attached to the hardware.

This isn't a NI thing, installing software before plugging in hardware is the proper procedure since Windows 95...

Correct. This happens with most hardware.

    Hah kind of funny
The korg nanoseries had that problem in fact it caused my lappy to have a black screen amd various other probs like the nanokey would type and was controlling functions i never mapped.
Now korg has a background ap. That monitors the usb and keeps the drivers stable.
This is a great device but does not come with an install disc. It just plugs in and the driver installs.
Of course driver updates are avail. On the korg site. But a generic one installs first.

My point is that wrong drivers can really play havic. Get USB Deview its free and this is how I keep my drivers in order. You would be surprised how many drivers that are installed that are not needed.
