Been using Maschine extensively since version 1.5, and one thing has bugged me a lot. It's a major drag on my workflow and I assume on others too. I'll explain.

I run a Maschine in a DAW (Cubase), this maschine is the backbone of all my tracks. I'll play around with recording patterns until I have something nice going. At this point I might have some different pattern variations made on group A B C and D, and drag n drop them to Cubase to make a sequence. I'll set the A B C and D groups to an empty pattern, because from now on they will be triggered from the DAW. All good until now.

But when doing this, it effectively stops me from adding new material on groups E F G and onward. Because, when I'm listening to the sequence, I'll hit record to record a pattern in group E, but then groups A B C D fill up (they record the sequence running in the DAW). There's workarounds but they require some time and especially attention, which all greatly detracts from my creativity. A workaround would be to record all my patterns before doing any sequencing but that seems very backward to me.

I have 2 better solutions that could be implemented:

    1) a "Record from hardware only" option, that makes it so midi input other than from the hardware gets played back but never recorded. I would have this activated always, because I never record from anything but my maschine controllers. Other users could switch this on and off when they need it (default should be "off" ofcourse)

    2) "Record active group only" option. This would make it so only group E goes in record mode when I press record with group E activated on my Maschine. Other groups should still play back their midi input, but not record it.

Both solutions would fix my problem. It's the biggest gripe I have with working with Maschine now. Fixing this would make my life a lot easier :)

Update: Now I feel bad for having belittled this problem with suggesting hacky workarounds. It's a real shame that the situation has not changed to this date.

I agree with your proposed solutions, but in the meantime here's an idea for a better workaround (and sorry in case I overlook something because so far I only have used my Maschine as standalone):
Maybe you can keep a couple of scenes with the patterns you built in Maschine, so you can mute/disable the midi Input from the DAW and play around with Maschine to create new stuff. I don't know how the sequencing of Cubase and Maschine is connected but I think it should be doable somehow. (For example, if the Sequencer in Maschine runs in union with Cubase you could make a very long empty Scene1 or something like that..)
    Hope that helps :)

I have the same problem here working within a DAW - Maschine records every note sent to it no matter what group is active in Maschine. So if I want to record something on a new group - pressing record in Maschine while I a DAW will record a pattern to any group that has midi coming in to it. Will google this afternoon - can this really be the way its supposed to be ??
